B2 Mach 2.0 Bridge Road has concocted some fantastic beers for its birthday releases: a barrel-aged Imperial Porter, a black saison and the B2 Bomber among them. The last of these is probably the one that caused the most excitement among the craft beer cognoscenti, a melding of a Belgian yeast with lots of hops and dark, roasty malts. For the brewerys seventh birthday, its been brought out of retirement and given a boost in the form of more hops. The result is the same utterly idiosyncratic nose that bamboozled us two years ago, with fruity hops and roasty dark chocolate aromas pierced by something a little funky. Deeply dark in the glass, its as much of a multi-dimensional sensory melange in the mouth too, making it a welcome return for a beer that was pretty much a Black Belgian IPA before wed even thought such a thing existed.

Probably not the most balanced beer in the world but I love what is going on in this beer. Dark fruits, big bitterness and a strong yeasty character too.

Been saving this for a while, could not wait any longer. Pours black with a creamy slightly tanned head. Some hops and roasted malts on the nose, neither taking more strong than the other. Plenty of chocolate and a hint of some coffee and some hops. For a beer with the intense flavours and alcohol content this beer goes down a treat. One of the better Black IPAs.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2013 Mild hop character on the nose while thankfully the yeast is hidden on the smell. Taste is mild hop and some roast. Tasty. Yeast and hop interplay is ideal. Mildly fluffy and delicious - like dessert. Nice finish. Overall, one of the best black ipas ive had recently, but there are better, and given the price of this fella, it might be worth waiting to see what mach 3 brings. Just left wondering if some of the hop character had dissipated ober time for the one we tried.

Not a bad beer. Good flavour but a little unbalanced. One of the better australian BIPAs

On tap @ The Albion. Poured a fantastic black with about a finger of slowly dissipating mocha coloured head. A lot of fresh pine hops in the aroma along with some chocolate and liquorice, maybe a hint of coffee/espresso. Bold hop flavours are a stand out, more funky than bitter though in this one, expected a little more bitterness. Really rich chocolate and aniseed taste comes through as well. Very nice on the palate, medium/thick and creamy. Aevrage amount of carbonation to help it slide down. A fairly gentle yet enjoyable after taste that is fairly long and a little bitter. My favourite from Newcastle Craft Beer Week.

750 ML into a CBS snifter Black, jet black. Big mocha colored head that falls off to a thick film. Leaving lots of spotty lacing. Nose of chocolate, roast, caramel, pine and grapefruit. Big roast notes. Chocolate, caramel, roast, Pine, grapefruit, and orange taste. Big roast again and a good hoppy fruit taste. Medium feel, low carbonation. Oliy and slick in mouth. Chocolate does smooth out to Grapefruit, candied orange and chocolate covered orange. Pine and grapefruit finish. Quite good

Pours pitch black with a large, dark tan head. Mixed aroma of heavy roasted malt and hops. Mainly pine and grapefruit in regards to the hops, along with some peppery notes. Flavours follow along the same lines. Intense roasty malt (but with little complexity) followed by pine and a full-on roasty and hoppy bitterness. Could use a more syrupy body. Not particularly complex in terms of roast and hops, but still very enjoyable.

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2013 Tap at Slowbeer. Looks good in the glass, nice foamy head with good lacing. Nose is very piney with heavy mocha flavours. A touch of grass there too. Pine needles and heavy chocolate work well together in the taste. Quite malt driven but works very nicely with the heap of piney hops in it. Very, very good beer

On tap at Archive. Midnight black in the glass with an even layer of tan foam. Great flavour and easy to drink. Holds the reasonably high alcohol content pretty well.

Bottle, 11C. The image of Ned in cycling keks remains disturbing. Black with a large light tan head that fades but never disappears. Fruity aroma of nectarines, kumquats, pepper; some toffee and chocolate peek out underneath. Silky and really quite intriguing texture, low carbonation. Alcohol not noticeable. Sweet with stone and some tropical fruits, chocolate, citrus, pepper, anise, a little tingly Sichaun pepper. No particular roasted flavours. Bitter and quite spicy at the finish. Considerably more harmonious than I remember the original.
