On tap @ The Trappist. Nearly black in color with tan foam. Kind of sticky and sugary beer. Lots of roast, licorice, and maybe some tar. There’s an earthy hop character to it along with some canned peach, orange rind, and pine. A bit of an ashy, burnt flavor to the finish which at least sort of makes up for the sweetness by providing a strong bitter character. Not sure what I expected, but wasn’t a huge fan. Deep murky dark dark brown. Pleasant fresh aromas of toffee, canteloupe/rockmelon and grapefruit citrus. The malts are much more forward in the taste. Licorice and honey sweetness, coffee and cigarette ashy and roasty bitterness. Only a slight underlying fruitiness. Not bad. stevoj (5040) - Boise, Idaho, USA - APR 11, 2015
Tap at Bitter Phew. Killer black IPA, sweetness tempers the normal roast grain bitterness. Black pour with tons of lacing. Mild roast grain aroma leads into taste that is equal parts sweet and bitter. Pleasant lingering bitterness (burnt toast) and sweet (dark chocolate). trith1 (53) - - APR 9, 2015
This is my first Mikkeller, it's.... Well.... Outstanding.
A Black IPA with a crisp and warming tone to the brew. Usually you're either hit with a big hop or a big malt, you're either too dry, or too malted out. But this, I could come back for more and more.
Great flavours, great textures. Thanks guys :') Stuu666 (13399) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 15, 2015
Bottle at Craig’s. Pours black, nose is roasted, liquorice, pine, taste is similar, chocolate.

Aroma: fresh malt and some grainy side note
App: black with a red/brown heart, small tan head with a foamy head
Flavour: some sharp hop and choc malt
Palate: highly carbonated and finishes fairly quickly with a light malty finish

330mL bottled 10/14/14
Deep ruby-highlighted brown body, holds a tan head.
Muted aroma somewhat; rich maltiness, lots of toasted nuttiness and cocoa, with resiny hops, hints of tropical fruits & leafiness.
Full body, oily texture, seems stronger than abv suggests.
Quite intense - burnt malts, cocoa, burnt sugar & toast, with hop notes of ripe rockmelon, peach, paw paw, leaves & mown grass. Strong bitterness, drying finish.
Full on beer, there’s some interesting hop character in there, but somewhat overshadowed by everything else going on. adamlikesbeer (10) - AUSTRALIA - OCT 14, 2014
Bottle from 2014. Aroma: Licorice, coffee and a bit esters. Nice black beer with a light brown head. Decent retention. Nice esters and lingering roasty flavours. The hop profile seems slightly overpowered by the yeast characteristics. Really like this bear, its fun and pretty tasty. Mjollnir (404) - Canberra, AUSTRALIA - AUG 24, 2014
330mL, bottled 04/14. Pours opaque dark brown with a persistent off-white head. Aromas of plums and berries, toast. Lots of hoppy and burnt bitterness and acidity and not much else, maybe some smoke, a bit too dry. Not nearly as malty as claimed by the label. Medium body, above average carbonation and a long finish. Jmar33 (210) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - AUG 15, 2014
UPDATED: JUN 19, 2015 Bottle. This was apparently the less good of all the versions (2013, the ’piney’ version). It was still pretty good, but I’d like to try the ’choc-orange’ versions.
Bottle. 2015 Version. Just as good as the 2015.
