Bridge Road Brewers together with gypsy brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller created a one off brew one Friday evening of March 2012. The result is The Dark Harvest. Inspired by the timing of the collaboration, it was decided to make a dark beer, using locally grown fresh hops. Of several research hops being grown at Rostrevor Hop Garden, one variety stood out for selection and was harvested just hours before being added to this beer.

On tap at beer de luxe. Very tasty, with very good balance. Aromas of coffee, grass, and caramel. Taste is sweet and bitter, with very long length. Palate is creamy and full bodied. Looks are beautiful; black with a big frothy head.

This is my first Mikkeller, it's.... Well.... Outstanding. A Black IPA with a crisp and warming tone to the brew. Usually you're either hit with a big hop or a big malt, you're either too dry, or too malted out. But this, I could come back for more and more. Great flavours, great textures. Thanks guys :')

330mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head and an upfront big orange and mango aroma but as it settles the coffee rears its head. Wow! this beer is pitch black but the moment it hits your tongue its orange, mango, lemon and then as it warms in the mouth you get a little choc + licorice. This beer is like that Christmas you have dreamed of where you, your parents and your wife’s parent mingle and get along with each other all day long. Amazing beer ill be back for many more!!!

33 cl bottle. Pours dark brown with a minimal head. Aroma is dense pine and apricot aroma, peachy and grapefruity. Smooth fruity, dense maæty and solid hoppy. Smooth, dark malty and crisp hoppy into a smooth dense finish. Stunning.

Gramoit (490) - Surrey, ENGLAND - APR 25, 2013
Pours jet black with excellent head retention. Brillaint on the nose, lots of grapefruit and hints of chocolate and some coffee. Each gulp gave me hops and first then coffee afterwards. Possibly the best black IPA I have had so far.

Bottle shared with Dad. A very dark brown to black beer with a nice pillowy creamy tan head. Aroma is grapefruit, pine, dark chocolate, orange, and light coffee. Mild sweetness, grapefruit and peachy flavour, a touch resiny, grassy. Roasty finish, good bitterness. Really enjoyed this beer.

ALLOVATE (3015) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUL 2, 2014
An impressive beer from start to finish. It produces up a midnight brown with a big, whipped cream, cappuccino foam that trails a mean lace. Nose hints at twiggy bark, mocha and bitter/sweet roasted cocoa beans, tree resin, pine needles and smoky phenols. Similar in the mouth. A lean towards strong, roasted malts over hops proves to work well. Body is medium and it lingers oh so long between sips. Smoky, chalky and woody with huge roasted coffee and bitter, dark chocolate notes. Light note of stonefruit and citrus pokes out from underneath giving it a supple juiciness. Quite dry overall with just enough sweetness for complexity. Wow, this is good. Gets better as it warms. A smashing ale. Well done! (33cL, Bottled on 10/04/14, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

DocLock (10683) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 22, 2017
Bottle from Smith’s. Pours turbid black with tan, frothy head. Nose is charred dark malt, resiny hops. Tastes dark malty, creamy, with spare hops, walnutty notes, and a bitter, British stouty finish, albeit with plenty of hops. More hops as it warms.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2017 [April 23 2012] Bottle, 13C. Clear dark brown with a light tan head that fades to a coat. Aroma of chocolate, orange, grapefruit, some bread. Medium-bodied with low carbonation. Not all that sweet but there’s toffee, bread and chocolate; bitter oranges and light spices. Bitter but not severe finish and there’s no sense of the hops having to struggle out from underneath to make their presence felt. Very inviting weight. No clashing or muddled flavours. Delicious. [8 3 8 5 17= 4.1]

[May 17 2012]A little of the zesty edge is already muted.

2013 version, April 17. Growler. Almost black with a large light tan head that lasts well. Aroma of cocoa, fudge, flowers, pine, grapefruit, passionfruit. Much less citrus than last time, pretty clearly a different hop. Shame, I loved the choc-orange. Similar balance, but perhaps a little more bitterness and the pine shines though at the end too. Really very nice but doesn’t quite do it for me like last time. [8 4 7 4 15 = 3.9] Leaving score as is.

[4/14] 2014 version. Back to that choc-orange. A little more bitterness or just (even) less sweetness than the original version? Food: sweet Gorgonzola on Challah.

[13/4/6] Think this is the only beer I have access to that I try to buy _and_ drink within a fortnight of release. More tropical this year, no choc-orange thing but lychees, flowers and nectarines meld with the chocolate brioche.

[8/4/17] Bottle from Wine Republic. Similar to last year, but a little cleaner, maybe a limey edge up front. Again chocolate brioche, barely ripe nectarine, some tropical notes. Quite bitter and a little peppery at the end. Best since the first year?
