Bridge Road Brewers together with gypsy brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller created a one off brew one Friday evening of March 2012. The result is The Dark Harvest. Inspired by the timing of the collaboration, it was decided to make a dark beer, using locally grown fresh hops. Of several research hops being grown at Rostrevor Hop Garden, one variety stood out for selection and was harvested just hours before being added to this beer.

Bottle. Pours black witha off white head. Licorice and citrus notes in the aroam. Crisp and hoppy at first. Then the dark malts and licorice takes over. Small herbalness in the aftertaste. This ones more about the hops and less about the malts (compared to other Black IPAs).

Bottle from the Davis Co-Op. Pours dark brown with a creamy/foamy tan head. Aroma starts with celery and develops to dark treacly malt and a hint of chocolate. Med body or better. Flavor is dark treacly malt, a little green/hop/herb and some dusty/dark/earthy chocolate. It's pretty dry and decently bitter. Hop for sure, but I can't identify it. Pretty nice Black IPA. Nicer than many.

UPDATED: SEP 12, 2017 cracker - nutty, hoppy aroma. Dark pour with thin tab head. mix of coffee malts, some chocolate and long finish with a mix of hops and tannin.

6.6%ABV. Black IPA. Poured out dark black brown. 38 SRM. Nose is coffee, chocolate and musty mushrooms, mold and fungus. Liniment and Chinese medicine ointment. There are also elements of old hardwood like palo santo or teak. Also has nice clean malt flavor of toasted wafers. Aroma of old well-worn leather, hint of sweat sock and wet wool. Overall, aromas of well worn material. Mouthfeel is soapy. Palate has some good solid malt flavor with wheat toast, black bread, roasted barley. Hop flavor are burnt twigs, charcoal, pine sap, light resin. Finish is ashy bitter. Overall, the experience was more black IPA than porter or stout for me because of how obvious and pronounced the hop flavors were.

33 cl. looks to have been bottled 2016-05-10. Deep brown almost black pour with a creamy head. Aroma of molasses, cocoa and light coffee with maybe some hints of citrus and soy sauce. Flavors of espresso with cream, cocoa nibs, caramel, toasted nut and some green herbs prickling on the tastebuds. Almost medium body is smooth with low-medium carbonation and has a nice balance.

Bottle from Smith’s. Pours turbid black with tan, frothy head. Nose is charred dark malt, resiny hops. Tastes dark malty, creamy, with spare hops, walnutty notes, and a bitter, British stouty finish, albeit with plenty of hops. More hops as it warms.

Bottle into a stout glass. Dark brown to almost black. Tan head. Slightly hop forward piney and citrus aroma which only just overrides the malty undertones. Mix of sweetness followed by a late and subtle bitterness. Nice drop just not much of a black IPA - Closer to a lightly hopped dunkel. Tasted like it was not fresh. Checked the label for the bottled date but despite having a specific are for the date, none was printed. There could be a Julian date on the bottle in 2mm high letters and numbers hidden right on the bottom edge of the bottle. If it is, I interpret the date bottled as the 6 Jan 2017 which might explain the less than expected hoppiness. All that said, still a nice beer.

On tap at Super Whatnot. Pours dark brown with tan head that laced nicely. Choc and pine hop aroma, smooth drinking with mild bitter finish.

330ml bottle bought at IC Beer in Kwun Tong.

Looks:Clear deep copper brown colour with a thick layer of dirt-like yeast sediments; Less than one-quarter finger head with residual soapy light beige foam which fades in 10 seconds; Fair sticky lacing with zero carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant dark malt, with caramel, toffee, strong pine, very strong resins, floral, molasses, spices, dry biscuits, lemon and grass.

Taste: Light sweet dark malt, with strong roastyness, caramel, burnt toffee, dark chocolate, floral, molasses, very strong pine, strong resins, spices, strong dough, strong lemon, strong bitter hops and grass.

Body: Mid to full body; slick and oozy palate.

Mouth Feel: Good dark Ale maltyness in a slightly oily background. Very roasty with overwhelming burnt toffee but not burnt toast. Monotone hops with very little fruits but loads of pine and ooze on par with IIPAs .Flowery with moderate sweetness, very doughty with strong lemon to round. Boring!

Hoppiness: Strong pine, strong resins, floral, spices, lemon and grass in nose and taste; Bitterness - burnt malt and hops - is very strong for a lasting, very high astringent bitter-sweet roast malty finish.

After taste: Quite dry. Piney oozy and very bitter to mouth.

Comments: This one aroma and taste is straight forward ooze and piney hops, plus monotone burnt toffee maltyness to complete the picture. It is strong and competent, but with so many BIPAs with colorful hops and malt combinations, this one is just average, considering the experimental hops they used are nothing but pine and ooze. Disappointing.
