UPDATED: JUN 2, 2012 2003 Bottle, deep amber pour with a light cream head. Nose is syrup, alcohol, chewy, light hops, and caramel. Nice palate, flavor is caramel, sweet, chewy, and a great finish.

On tap at the brewpub on Marshall St. in downtown Portland, OR. Brownish-orange pour with a thin off-white head. Rather subdued aroma of toffee and graham cracker with a light floral hop presence. The taste is more sweet than hoppy with tons of toffee and caramel but does feature a bit of a hop bite on the back end. Certainly made in more of the classic sense than an American barleywine but it is done quite well.

22 oz. bottle shared by Keir- thanks, Keir! He said it was a 2007. Pours a deep, clear red-amber color with a small off-white head. The aroma had dark fruits, resin, caramel malts- simple and solid. The flavor was even more resinous, and coupled with a bitterness it suggested there was some hop character left; probably the alcohol, but I could be fooled. Caramel malts and dark fruits round it out. Medium-bodied, with modest carbonation and a sticky, resinous mouthfeel. Good barleywine that apparently ages well.

Westmeister (2129) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - JAN 31, 2012
Draft @ Bridgeport - Pours a clear amber with a frothy dark tan head that maintain pretty well. Aroma is dominated by sweet caramel and toffee malts, some brown sugar and vanilla. Flavor reveals the same as the nose with some pine/resin hops. Smooth sipper and quite enjoyable.

Dann wieder ausgewogener, leichter Hopfen, trocken. Erdiger und süß-malziger Ausklang. 9/11/11/12/7/11

Alphadelic (2237) - Portland, Oregon, USA - AUG 19, 2011
A bright and rich red. A woody and fruity nose with a little heat to it. In the mouth it is pretty strong with sweet, juicy fruit flavours and hints of sherry or tawny port. Good if not hugely deep. Hot.

mcberko (17809) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 16, 2011
Sampled on tap at PIB, pours hazy orangey amber with a tiny head. Aroma of light toasted caramel, nuts, subtle dark fruits - subtle aroma. Flavour of nuts, toasted caramel, subtle fruits and a boozy finish. Not so complex for a barley wine. Sort of muted flavours. Decent.

Nikiel (879) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUN 5, 2011
On tap at Bridgeport with Jeff. Pours a mahogany brown with light foam. Smells sweet with hints of caramel and hops. Tastes pretty sweet with some vanilla, almond and very much lives up to the "wine" name.

3.3
Hophazard (193) - San Francisco, California, USA - FEB 17, 2011
Dark fruit is quickly followed by a mustiness, pungent tartness. Pours a deep ruby color with off white head. Plum, blackberry jam begins, drying out the palate in the process. Chewy and thick; almost syrupy. Alcohol warmth reminds you that this is a barleywine. Will warm you up from the inside.
