Bottle #11, 2003: This barley wine pours a wonderfull, clear, ruby red mahogany color with a small, diminishing, light tan head. It has a nice malty sweet aroma with a touch of alcohol. It has a full body with soft carbonation. The flavor is mostly malty sweet with a slightly floral hop taste in the finish, though even the finish is dominated by the malts. Alcohol is well hidden. A fantastic barley wine that really put the emphasis on the malts rather than the hops, which is typical of many American barley wines. This one is extremely smooth, malty sweet, and highly drinkable despite the big ABV. Very nice.

Bomber. Labeled as Old Knucklehead - Barley Wine Style Ale - Ale Aged with Oak - No. 013 Bottling. Sweet and fruity with mild bitterness. Never did pick up any oak. Finish is sweet with a light boozyness.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2006 One of those great finds that you have had a few times and assumed you have rated but low and behold have not, malty with bold spiceyness. A bit more chunky than most barleywines, but a nice drink.

ruby chestnut pour with fading head.Oaky vanilla scents are coupled with a dried fruit, toasted chocolate, quiet burbon and brandy aroma. A piney hop bittering and almost nutty flavor works with a brandylike warming taste which lingers with complexity on the palate. Nice.

Deep amber in color, initially a thick tan head. Alcohol and ripe fruits. Big and full, very ripe. Yeasty hints. A creamy mouthfeel and a warm yeasty finish.

Pours reddish brown with a creamy tan head and plenty of lace. Aromas of fresh hops, grassy, floral. Taste is rather light for a nine percent, making drinking it a bit dangerous. Slightly bitter finish.

2003 - Nice subtle malt aroma. Malty backbane with a good balance of bitterness. Still a bit young. This beer should age quite well.

I really liked this barleywine, which is not one of my favorite styles. Attractive pour at the brewpub and inviting. Aromas are vinous and sweet. Flavors are ever so slightly sour with caramel and toffee plus hop power. Body is rich and decadent. This is really great IMHO...a top tier barleywine.
