Light whiskey, wood and roast aromas. Roasty, thin porter with a slight edge of almost-tartness due to the whiskey, which also imparts some vanilla notes. Brown-copper in color with a bit of tan head.
22 oz bottle into a goblet. Pours a dark brown. looking opaque and near black in the glass. A moderate size, durable tan head leaves a temporary but full coat of lacing on the glass.
Aroma: a clear touch of whisky here; dark roasted grains with a slight hint of burnt malt. Some dark fruit and roasted nut notes.
Flavor:disappointing, given the aroma, mainly due to an overbearing contribution from wood (oak?). Whisky mainly appears in the finish and aftertaste. Plenty of dark roasted malts, subtle dark fruit notes, and a hint of sour fruit.
Mouthfeel: medium body and carbonation.

Bottle sample from a 2012 tasting. Pours dark brown in color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, char, bourbon, wood, vanilla, earthy notes, hint of chocolate, flavors are decent, but the body is thin and at times seems a bit watery. Pours like liquid obsidian under a tight crema head that fades into a thin blanket. Swirls with a few arcs of lace.

Lots of black root. Whole green peppercorns. Pumpernickel. Figs and prunes. Twigs and Autumn leaves. Slight tart lactic twang along the sides.
Fleshy meaty prunes and dates in the middle with vinous tannic notes along the edges. Oily tobacco and wood varnish notes in the middle. A bit leathery and papery underneath. Quick nip of lactic sourness in the very back swallow.
A unique beer that is a blend of whiskey barrel aged porter and un-barreled stout that ultimately reminded me of a Baltic Porter. I enjoyed the slight lactic tang but it doesn’t quite fit with the style which lands on Imperial/Strong Porter. Good but the recipe could use a few tweaks.
22oz bottle 8/13/13 (Binny’s Naperville)-40° in Shaker-Pours black with ruby tints. Aroma of sweetness, vanilla, chocolate, oak, and slight coffee. Taste of malt, vanilla, chocolate, bourbon, oak, and slight sweetness. This medium bodied brew is not too shabby. A - Pours black with red highlights when held to the light. An active 1.5 fingers of cola head.
S - Roasted malts, vanilla, oak, coffee beans, dark chocolate, raisins, bourbon comes out more and more as it warms.
T - Follows the nose with roasted malts, roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate, smoked oak is present as well as some bourbon booziness. There’s an unknown fruity character. Leafy hops provide bitterness and finishes very dry.
M - Moderate carbonation, light to medium body, somewhat creamy, warming.
Very interesting beer. The components work together and do not overpower each other. The bourbon compliments the coffee and chocolate.

I may need to come back to this one; the smell of fish sauce from dinner is overpowering everything else in the house. Sorry, aroma score. What I can gather: vanilla and whiskey barrels and a woody thing going on not unlike a campfire. That makes sense since this half of this beer was aged with oak.
Visually, Things I can tell: A) The color is raven dark, and the head runs away at a Jamaican runner’s speed. Shoom! B) Lack of bubbles on the ring, but there’s some La Brea stuff going on in the middle of the pond. Hot! Lookin’ good, Raven!
I’m not a huge barrel aged guy; they’re usually too sweet. This is not. There is a sweetness to it, but Bridgeport has done a rather fine job blending the barrel sweets with the oak wood (almost smokey). Taste reminds me of gathering wood on a wet, cloudy day with a reward glass of whiskey sitting on the rail of the deck that gets a sip after each pile accumulated. There’s definitely a strong alcohol essence going on too. Earthy.
Palate. The whiskey likes to hang out in the center of the tongue and leave some barrel flavor behind. The liquid dissipates quickly; it’s not a thick beer. Upper middle of the logging road in terms of thickness. I referenced a logger road because it’s woody. Quite easy to drink. Syrupy residuals and then gone. it’s still a lighter, as in less dense, porter. It’s a satisfying beer at 7.5%, but it’s not blowing me away with the flavor. I like the less sweet compared to other barrel aged beers, yes, and the oak’s nice. The beer they started with was around average, and even with all the smokey and woody bells and whistles, it’s still an above average beer.
