Cask-conditioned at the Three Tuns, Bristol 14/11/2011. Reddish-amber with a decent, off-white head. Aroma of red berry fruit, caramel, cereal malts and a touch of citrus hop. Erm, the 2012 version (exactly the same recipe as 2011??). Pale chestnut topped with creamy beige. Rich, plummy, deeply Belgian aroma with suggestions of cinder toffee, almond, Shep-like hopcone. A sniffer. Slick, weighty, rich malt and oak softness with hints of liquorice, berries, yeast extract, smooth oak and sweet almond. Mature, elegant sipper.

Bottle from My Favourite Beers, Cheltenham, 11.02.12 consumed the same day in new Frank at Brierfields campsite, Cheltenham, Glos after a day of Morris dancing at Cheltenham Folk Festival Pours hazy brown with a head that swiftly departed. Malty and with a good depth of flavour, the oakiness showing along with a good hoppy profile. Plenty of dark fruits and some hedgerow ones as well but its the big maltiness that I find most striking and enjoyable. I have to confess to drinking this very late in the day after quite a few beers so my notes were at best sketchy, but I enjoyed this and will have to try and age one for the future. 2015 Bottle from Favourite Beers, Cheltenham. Hazy ruby with a nice frothy cream head. Quite a few chunks of sediment, but it wasn’t a careful pour. Aroma of ripe red fruits. The taste has lots of fruity malts. Barries, light spice and a touch of aniseed. Maybe a hint of grapefruit hop too. Toffee malt undertones. Tasty. Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green. It pours very dark brown-ruby, with a thin beige head. the nose is treacle, sticky dried fruit, golden syrup and cinnamon. The taste is roasted malt, toast, oak, chocolate, coffee, salt, meat, raisin, sultana, leather, tobacco and alcohol warmth, with a very long dry-toast finish. Full body and soft carbonation. Good.

500ml bottle from Utobeer. Clear ruby red with lasting beige head. Aroma of dry malt and fruity malt. Flavour of fruits, milk choc, some alcohol, some hop tingle on finish. Good warming beer. Quite a lot of sticky sediment stuck to bottom of bottle. Good warm beer.
