(Bottle, 0.33 l, at Gallows Bird, 20130125) The beer poured black. Its head was small and lightly brown. Aroma had wood, vineousness, malts and alcohol. Palate was full bodied and dry with low carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, vanilla, vineousness, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was woody, roasty and bitter. The wood was too strong but otherwise a decent beer.

330ml bottle @ Gallows Bird, Espoo

Pours pitch black with small brown head. Aroma of strong roasty notes, hints of ripe fruits, vanilla, bourbon, wood and coffee. Taste is roasty with some notes of bourbon, vanilla and oak. Feels quite sweet but not that heavy. Finish is roasty and sweetish with some malty notes and hints of vanilla and oak. Okay, not your typical barrel aged IS.

Brilliant smell. Getting lots of soft bourbon, keeps giving. Making my eyes water a little as I’m inhaling so much. Bit like in Dom’s car, only the smell is more than marginally preferable. Not sure what they were on about either, I’ve not mentioned any dinosaurs, think it was only Andy though, not Marc - he didn’t seem to know either. mm... smooth, thick, full, not too much booze... sweet, the bourbon aging takes away so much of the classic coffee/choc flavours you get in imp stouts, creating a very different drink. Like a quality stout with a shot of bourbon in but the bourbon has no alcohol. This is interesting, glad it’s not 500ml though. Gonna relax now the rating is done.

Very smooth, slight coconut. Good chocolate. Not what I expected from bourbon aging. very nice.

Bottled (from Ales By Mail). Pitch black colour more or less, with a huge brown foamy head. Aroma is quite sweet ripe fruity/cherryish notes with mild vanilla and some dark sugary and wooden notes. Flavour is quite similar with mild smoked notes. A bit of an alcoholic sting in the flavour, but not disturbing. Actually quite nice balance. Interesting dryish palate.

Bottle from brewer 12 Stouts 2012 161212
Pitch black thick pour, big dirty tan head that dissipates to thin brown rim, some lacing
Aroma of rich dark malts, dark chocolate, soft mellow whisky, dab of dark fruits, very smooth aroma, almost no booze on the nose, complex aroma
Taste of deep dark malts, dark chocolate, dab of liquorice, whisky still very mellow, booze more noticeable but still well hidden for the abv, some dark fruits, soft wood, pretty complex
Palate - soft carb, full body, oily smooth texture. Finish is very smooth, more chocolate cake comes through, lots of flavour in the finish, some warming alcohol then some residual dryness
Overall - I like it that the whisky is subtle, really nice chocolate in the finish

Bottle at home. Dark tar brown with fluffy tan head that soon collapses. Rich vanilla and coconut nose with an underlying hint of marmite. Gentle carbonation with cola first then tonnes of woody vanilla with some meaty yeast and soft cream cheese notes. Long sticky warming finish.

12 stouts of Christmas 2012 tasting with Craig and Ben. Pours a very dark brown colour with a fair, light tan head. Aroma of bourbon, chocolate, oak, vanilla, caramel and roasty malt. Similar flavours with mild carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. Lovely.
