September 1st, 2014 - Bristol has a very special place in my heart as the omnipresent brew of choice for college students who could scratch together enough money to be picky about their drinking habits. And I return now back in 2014 to see how my palate has evolved against some of the seminal beers of my college salad days. I begin with a new face, the Scotch Ale, now proudly being served at the new location. With a dark, oak body, it looks contentious, and the nose is a deep pit of malt. I detect more chocolate notes than I’d expect from a scotch ale, though, with a clean, cold and muted smell otherwise. This is a stern beer (as stern as beer can be) but the flavor reveals a heavy booziness, but not overwhelming. In tao poured a hazy dark copper hue w/ medium beige head diminishing to a thin cap and thick lacing. Moderate sweet malt aroma. Initial flavor is moderate sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish. Tastes are chocolate, rye, dough, brown sugar, roasted malts, and coco nibs. Medium bodied and average carbonation.

22oz bottle poured into a Tulip at 39°. Color is a deep dark brown with light carbonation and a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and a hint of coffee. It has a medium body with a lighter mouth feel. Flavor is sweet roasted toffee, dark chocolate and a light fruit note. After taste is a mild bitterness with a bit of the roasted flavors hanging on. Pours a viscous dark chocolate with a small quickly dissipating head.Nose is cocoa and dark bitter chocolate with a nutty foundation. Flavor is mocha, nuts, leather, malt and a hint of alcohol. Mouthfeel is full and smooth without being too creamy. Finishes decent with just a hint of bitter hop.

Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is dark brown.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted bread, caramel, husks), lightly yeasty (dough, sweat), with light notes of brown sugar, gum, grape juice.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean.
Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.

650 ml. bottle. Pours a medium short duration, ivory head, with some lacing, over a clear reddish brown (SRM 20) body.....nose is light dried fruits including cherry, raisin, plum, hints of brown sugar....taste is light sweet malts with raisin, plum dominating, leading to an off organic rubber sulfur taste, finishing dry....mouth feel light of medium, carbonation high. My comments are for this particular bottle which may or may not be typical of the whole batch. I am not sure which of the several steps in the Scotch Ale category this was intended. The description makes it seem a " Wee Heavy" and I’ll grade it as such. The malt backbone while dominant is quite simple with minimal sweetness. Bomber from Supermarket Liquors - Fort Collins. Nose is toffee, bubblegum, roast, prunes, and a hint of vanilla.Nose a huge nose but wonderfully complex. Clear rusty brown with a medium, heavy lacing head. Flavor is fruity, lightly bitter, white peppery, and toffee. Body is a little light but ABV is only 6.9%. I would drink this any day! Pours dark brown in color with a khaki head. Light peat note, mild roasted malt aroma, and lots of toasted bread and toffee. A touch of fruit in there, maybe some light hop aroma. The flavor is slightly metallic with some dark fruits, mostly raisins. Toasted bread, light caramel, and some bready malt. A hint of peat and a light hop character. Bottle. Pours clear brown with a medium, frothy tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is cookie, nutty, and toast malt with earthy hops, dates and plums. Flavor is sweet malt, dark fruity esters, light hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Medium-full body and medium carbonation.
