Draught. Mondiale 2009 - day 3. Hazy gold with an average off-white creamy/frothy head. Aroma of oak, vanilla, orange zest and toasty malt - THIS is a golden ale??? So easy-drinking, so smooth-tasting (shut up, smooth is SO a taste, I heard it on teevee) - similar to the aroma elements, but sweeter, tasted around 6% (4? really?), with a delicate oakiness that oh so rarely is achieved - for once I found something I could drink in quantity, quite gladly, that had been bunged in a barrel to age - well done indeed! Slick mouthfeel, appropriate, if slightly weak carbonation, with a slightly acdic/resiny woody citrus finish - amazingly quaffable.

Draught at ’Mondial de la Biere 2009’, Montréal, QC. Pours a hazy orange-brown with a small diminishing white head. Aroma of bourbon, fruit and wood -- smells really nice. Delicious flavour of bourbon, wood and fruit along with some malt in the background -- the amount of bourbon is just right. Medium bodied. Excellent -- the first easy-drinking bourbon barrel aged beer?

[2272-20090607] Sample. Grape and fruity oak apple barrel aroma. Hazy, medium brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. Lots of vanilla wood fruit malt in the flavour with a watery sweet bourbon infusion and some apple. Medium-full body. Fruity and vanilla are nice but otherwise a little flat and watery.

A blonde hazed ale with a thin white head. A pleasant vanilla wine barrel aroma, with Breet and bread. In mouth, a nice lightly sweet malt with complex Brett, vanilla, a bit short in mouth. Overall, a nice experiment, with my namesake. On tap at Mondiale 2009.

jercraigs (10923) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 13, 2009
2009-06-07. Murky light brown body, modest off white head. (3+) Flavour is barrel dominant, wood and bourbon with light vanilla undertones, mild malts are about the only sign of the underlying beer. (6+) Aroma is primarily dilute wood with bourbon touches, and very little beer showing through. Average palate feels thinner than it should due to the light carbonation. There is just not nearly enough beer to compete with the barrel. A generous pour at the booth is still not enough to justify what they were charging for this. Very disappointing. On tap, Mondial 2009, Montreal

In short: An unusual very woody and bourbonny 4% brew of some kind. Unclassifiable.

How: Tap at brewpub

The look: Cloudy light brown body topped by a medium beige head

In long: A very woody nose with birch tree and bourbon barrel. The taste is very woody/barrel but in a way I have never experienced. A strong taste of paper birch (!!), dry toffee and a touch of single-malt whisky. Very little sweetness sensation, woody dry finish, but then the wood goes away making room for a sweet toffee taffy flavour on the comeback. This really is an unusual experiment. Unclassifiable and very intriguing. I’m giving it an ok score more because it was fascinating than because it was actually very good. A barrel aged 4% blonde ale is about is about as odd and against the grain as a feminist rapper.
