Sample, savoured at the Mondial de la bière on May 29 2008; eye: dirty brown, tiny ring of beige head, suspended matter/not filtered, no lacing; nose: oak, liqueur-like, caramelized malt, alcohol, candied fruits; mouth: oak, caramelized malt, alcohol, caramel, finale in oak with alcohol warmth, full body, not much carbonation, mildly sweet; overall: quite good FRANÇAIS Échantillon, savourée au Mondial de la bière le 29 mai 2008; oeil : brune sale, petit anneau de mousse beige, matière en suspension/non filtrée, pas de dentelle; nez : chêne, liqueur, malt caramélisé, alcool, fruits candis; bouche : chêne, malt caramélisé, alcool, caramel, finale en chêne et en chaleur d’alcool, corsée, peu carbonatée, moyennement sucrée; en résumé : pas mal bon

In short: A brutal unbalanced syrupy and woody barley wine.

The look: Cloudy brown body topped by a small beige head
In long: Nose is fudge, barrel and alcohol fumes. Taste is more of the same. Too much alcohol. Caramel, maple, brown sugar and a shot of single-malt whisky. Very woody. Light fruity notes of usual dark fruits but basically the alcohol and whisky barrels overpower everything. Syrupy. Lack of hops presence, totally unbalanced. An overall sensation of a raw unrefined whisky. Quite drinkable despite some problems, maybe it was too young, time may help to calm down the barrels flavours and develop more fruity flavours but I don’t think it will help it’s balance problem. This thing had all the delicacy and softness of a lawnmower shave.

Sampled @ Mondial 2008. Alcohol nose is overpowering, wood is strong too, hazy brown, small tan head. Taste is all booze, wood and some malt. Unbalanced, overpoweringly alcoholic. Ordinary.

Rastacouere (6177) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 3, 2008
Objectively speaking: A barley wine who took a lot of its character from its long sojourn in a whisky barrel.
I like: Not particularly aggressive whisky character, but the barrel itself is very important in he flavour profile. Solid fruity malt profile, but unrefined , rather raw sugariness. I have this feeling I would not like the beer they threw in the barrel so much, I would not like the whisky that lived in the barrel once, yet I still enjoy the beer mature in the barrel, so in this case, it’s a successful brew.
I dislike: Solid mouthfeel, medium-thick and smoothly carbonated. Quite vanilla/butter oriented. Lots of hints, but not very focused, little cerealic/toasty/nutty complexity despite the heaviness. Lots of alcohol warmth. I’d need to full glass to medidtate further.

jercraigs (10867) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 3, 2008
2008-05-30. Dark brown body with a small quick beige head that fades a bit but is revived (3+). Boozy, woody aroma - barrel aged? Muted malt is forcibly placed in the back seat. Flavour is likewise dominated by wood notes. Sweet malt base, modest alcohol is variably warming. Sweet caramel touched malt is dried out abruptly by the return of the wood. Woody vanilla finish. (7+) Medium bodied palate. (3+) Decent but I found the wood character extremely distracting from the core flavour. Base beer is likely less complex but much more drinkable. TaktikMTL (7967) - Montréal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 3, 2008
Verre de dégustation, provenant d’un fût, au Mondial de la Bière 2008 (Montréal, QC). Arôme: Odeur de caramel et de petits fruits foncés avec une pointe d’alcool. Apparence: La couleur est brune opaque. Présence d’un mince col mousseux et d’une large dentelle sur le verre. Saveur: Goût de caramel, raisins et cerises avec une pointe d’alcool. Durée moyenne de l’arrière goût. Palette: Le corps est moyen avec une texture légèrement minérale. Moyenne effervescence en bouche. Présence de caramel en arrière goût. (Rating #1726)

Raisins secs, brandy, bananes, petits fruits des champs et caramel brûlé ne sont que certaines des propriétés odorifiques que mes narines auront captées, et ce malgré la fin de ma grippe, résultant inévitablement en une mauvaise humeur des narines.

Robe brune avec un collet blanc s’accrochant aux parois du verre. En bouche, le sucre, la mélasse et l’alcool (brandy toujours ? ou bourbon ?)viennent réchauffer la langue et la gorge. À n’en pas douter, c’est une très bonne bière, qui mérite de vieillir encore et d’être bue dans un contexte autre le Mondial de la BIère, dans un verre plus adéquat à la dégustation, comme un snifter.

Pyrozoid (361) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 31, 2008
(Dégusté avec french tickler au mondial) Biere brune brumeuse avec un mince collet pas tres collant. Odeur d’alcohol, épices, senteur médicamenteux, cerises, canneberge, mures, bananes et sucre d’orge. Gout d’épinettes, sucre, bois, beurre. Une tres belle decouverte.

Quevillon (3172) - Boisbriand, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 30, 2008
Bière #28 au Mondial 08 (30/5/08), en fut. Brune foncé vaseuse, peu de collet. arome de raison, fraise et melon d’eau alcoolisé, un peu malté. Goût de fruits caramelisé, un peu fortifier, avec des notes de malt boisé. Ce que j’ai bu d’eux autres avant étaient plutôt ordinare, mais ça c’est exelante!

App.: Brown cloudy poor, light brown head.

Aromas: Grapes, cherries, cranberries, bananas, vanilla, woody...

Palate: Full bodied, amazing balance, flavors are explosive!

Flavors: Grapes, cental wood, butter, caramel, bananas, whiskey...

Notes: My revelation for this year’s Mondial! A very complexe and incredible brew... Good job!
