The looks of the beer are nice. The color of the beer is a nice brown, whilst a strong light reveals a lovely ruby red glow. The beer has some cloudiness. On top of the beer a nice soft layer of brown foam is formed. Foam retention is adequate. After a while a nice soft drape of foam still exists. The smell is not bad. I smell some clear malt aroma’s, forming the base of the beer. There are some aroma’s of caramel and toffee. Besides this there are some hoppy bitters, although very little. There is a clear yeast aroma though, giving a doughy aroma. All aroma’s are rather mild though, and there isn’t a lot of kick. To bad. The taste is a bit stronger, but pretty much the same. The toffee malt forms the base and is rather sweet. On top of this there are some bitter hops and even some sours from the yeast. The yeast has a barnyard touch. Not an unpleasant barnyard touch though. The taste is a tiny bit to sour for me; a bit less and it would be well balanced. I also miss some kick. The palate is nothing special. Medium body and carbonation, quite smooth texture. The finish contains some nice alcohol warmth and is long enough. In the end there is a nice bitter touch. Not bad, but I know better beers.

Pours hazy brown with a tan head that lasts and leaves lacing. The aroma contains malt, raisins, dried fruits, caramel, some bread, chocolate and herbs. It tastes medium sweet and light bitter. Light dry and fruity, but rather short finish. Creamy texture and fizzy to heavy carbonation. Decent.

33cl bottle at home. Appearance: caramel brown with medium off-white head. Aroma: bread, grains, burnt sugar, banana, pear, trace of metal and some aldehydes. Taste: high sweetness and medium butterness. Notes of bread, roasty grains, burnt sugar and some red fruits. Palate: medium bodied, sticky texture and medium carbonation.

Brown with white head. Taste is like a dubbel with acidity of an oud bruine. Add lots of malty sweetness. Strange beer,

F: big, brownish, good retention. C: dark to dark brown, some dark red tones against the light, opaque. A: malt, peach, tangerine, caramel, candy sugar, hint of chocolate. T: malty, bready, light chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, cherries, hint of plums, toasty, yeasty, but overall very good balanced, medium full body, normal carbonation, very good beer worth to try, 0,33l bottle from Prik&Tik /Quali-drinks/ in Brussels.

The dubbel in this series (I think it was their first one), tasted from a 75 cl bottle with cork, labelled Broeder Jacob Brown. Bottle opens with a bang but no gushing at all. Medium thick, lightly lacing, pale yellowish beige, coarse head over an initially clear, deep burgundy brown beer with ruby red hue. Aroma does invite to have a sip: lots of butterscotch, milk chocolate or even cocoa, cashew nuts, some ’natural’ (haemoglobin) iron, candied dates, dead forest leaves and even some (inoffensive) FFF, cherry pits, dried fig, sweet roses, brown sugar, blackberry jam, port, toasted brown bread, dry cloves, vague nutmeg and cinnamon, peppermint even, black pepper, pear syrup, a weird but not unfitting impression of varnish or shoe polish, fairly strong effect of calvados, banana, white pepper, hint almond. Crisp, fruity onset, lots of ripe, sweet-and-sour blackberry, some banana, fig, pear; sharp carbonation, even a tad overcarbonated for the dubbel style with a slight ’numbing’ effect, somewhat impairing an otherwise lean and supple mouthfeel. Full caramelly and nutty malt bittersweetness ensues, sweet at first and turning bitterish in the end, a wee bit toasted somewhere, while clove-like phenols and dried berry- and dried banana-like fruitiness dance on top of it, as should be the case in any Belgian dubbel. Finishes with more toasted bitterishness while the caramel sweetness continues with equal force; all the way at the back, there is a spicy, herbal, mildly earthy hop bitterness trying to balance out this caramel sweetness whilst not quite managing to achieve this, as well as a splash of warming, calvados-like alcohol which balances on the brink of astringency. Somewhat stronger than a classic dubbel, this is a sipper to handle with a certain amount of care; though correctly made, I cannot help but feeling it still draws on the same sources as the overly commercial ’industrial standard’ examples of the style (think Grimbergen Dubbel or Leffe Brune), though it certainly has more ’flair’ and authenticity to it; artisanal interpretation of an otherwise overexposed classic Belgian ale style I’d say, but not very inspired, though I must admit there is something ’chocolatey’ aromatic in the nose which kept drawing my attention. I had the same feeling about the new Wolf 6 by Lupus last week - but this one has been in existence longer of course, and has long been surpassed by its more interesting brethren, like Broeder Jacob Double Port. Still: nice to finally taste the basis of this range, I apparently missed out on it somehow, and I can imagine this being a bit better from a 75 cl bottle than from a 33 cl bottle, as is the case with many classic Belgian bottle-conditioned ales.
