COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

355ml bottle into pint glass. Hazy golden bronze beer with foamy white head. Carbonation is steady and fine. Distant bready malt nose with a hint of pepper and lemon. Slight zing on tasting, full-bodied. Refreshing and clean. Finish has hints of grapefruit, lemon, caramel and bubblegum. The peppery bitterness comes back right at the end. Dangerously easy-drinking at 6.9%.

Garrett Oliver is one to eschew the use of hops merely to appease the hophead crowd. For him, hops need to serve a stylistic purpose. Even with an IPA, they cant be tossed in with abandon just for the hell of it. That can take some getting used to for a hop-crazed masochist, i.e., me. Still, getting to try several of these courtesy of our generous hosts in New York gave me the chance to appreciate this English-style IPA. Its balanced but still noticeably hoppy. Grassy, herbaceous hops redolent of black tea. Beers like this are becoming less common here in the states, but they still have their place.

Can from Tesco. Lovely looking brew, clean gold with a long lasting white head, good mousse. Big hoppy nose, nicely balanced palate, well hopped with soft malty notes, could be a bit fuller in body. Good beer.
