Poured into a snifter. Extra Brune pours a gorgeous amber color, with a light tan head on top with good retention, which eventually leads to very nice lacing. Aromas of sweet dark candi sugar, some fall fruits, apples, pears, figs, and raisins. Some clove and banana esters as well. The taste is candi sugar of the bat, nice hints if fall fruits (lighter than the aroma) as well as some light flavors of clove and nutmeg. The carbonation level is a little higher than normal, but it fits the style very nicely. Very smooth and slightly creamy for the mouthfeel. This beer is awesome. (Draught) Pours a cloudy amber body with a medium creamy almond head. Aroma of clove, banana, earthiness, toasted malt, and faint plastic. Flavor of rye, light smoke, dark fruit, candi sugar, and caramel malt.

Served from tap at the Brooklyn Beer Dinner at Capital Ale House - Downtown. Very clear ruby amber body with no head and nice lacing. Sweet candi sugar, caramel, molassas, and light floral hops and light rum soaked fruit aroma. Sweet caramel, molassas and rum soaked fruit flavor with hints of banana. Capital Ale House pairing with Garrett Oliver 05/15/08. Clear dark red with no head. Spicey hops, caramel and roast malts with a spicey fruity yeast character and nice spicey belgian phenolics. Pours a dark chestnut brown with thin off white head. Pleasant aroma of dark fruit, chocolate maltiness and candi sugar. Very smooth quaffable beer with lots of dark fruit (prune, raisin, plum, etc.) balancing out the chocolate malts, caramel and candi sugar. Tap @ House of Brews. Pours a hazy brownish-amber with a lacy off-white head. Aroma is a unique and wonderfully-enticing array of malt, banana, dark fruit, and some caramel/clove aspects as well. The taste is caramel malt up front and then, from my perspective, goes absolutely nowhere. Brooklyn’s Belgian efforts have frustrated me endlessly because they are clearly well put-together but would be vastly better if they had a little complexity. Overall, a disappointment, and that’s a shame, because with a little refinement it could be extraordinary.
