On tap. Lightly hazy golden with a lasting creamy ring of foam. Mild aroma of spicy lemongrass, caramel and light toast. Taste is the same with a big bitter finish of dry grass and woody pith. At just over 6% abv, Gold Standard is a bit stronger than your average Bavarian Kellerbier, though it goes down just as refreshingly. It also has more of a Helles/Pils color and complexion -- clear and golden -- without much haze. Brooklyn Brewery’s golden lager also is a bit cleaner/less rustic than most of the Kellerbiers that we’ve sampled, and it deliberately has a punchier hop profile, with decidedly greater bitterness and hop aroma than the Ur-Kellers. But the crisp hop attributes and evenly matched by the rich maltiness of the beer, courtesy of a floor malted grainbill. Soft bready white head floats atop a brew painted in brilliant golden straw. Lace clings to the sides of my glass like glue while the head persists from first quaff to last.

Fresh grains followed by lemon, lime, and orange citrus pith and oily peel in the back. Very vivacious and vibrant. Sesame seeds and water crackers. Lemon bars in the middle. Homemade Italian bread that is golden crunchy outside and soft airy inside.
Lemon and lime zips along the sides of my tongue, traveling from the front to the back. Straw and bread crusts underneath. Table crackers and sesame seeds in the middle. Fresh! Italian and French breads kissed by the sun. Orange zest. Lemon and orange candies. Pithy bitterness lingers at the back of my tongue, refreshing and bringing me back for more. Touch of honeyed cereal grains come to play as my glass slowly warms.
One of my Top Beers of 2012 and still a favorite. I can still taste this beautiful beer which was released as part of Garrett Oliver’s Brewmaster Reserve series. I would be extremely pleased if Garrett were to get a hankering to brew this beer again. Brilliant!

Tap. Cloudy golden color. Thin foamy white head. Aroma of wheat, clove, and touch of grassy hops. Flavors were wheat, herb-hop, and bitter vegetable. Smooth and thick palate. Draft. Clear golden color with a medium sized white head. Aroma is bready malts, light fruity, herbal and floral hops. The flavor has lightly toasted bread, herbal and floral hops creating a mild to moderate bitterness with a light fruity note. Nothing stands out and it was sampled in between some pretty big beers.

hazy gold, frothy white head lasts leaving heavy lacing. Heavy dough and dusty nose, muted grains. Flavor opens WAY up, oily throughout, bright grass and resin, dusty grains all over, lingering sawdust and earth, light esters but forgivable. Growler @ Cumming Growler Shop. From what the store owner described the beer, it is an unfiltered Brooklyn Lager. This one pours clear, golden. White foam. Aroma of fresh bread dough, hops give a grassy scent. Light straw flavor, grassy notes, loads of bread. Simple, one of the better beers I’ve had this summer. Ratings seem low, considering the terrific pint I enjoyed this week (at My Place in Newtown, CT). I suspect freshness of keg makes a huge diff with this style, plus I suspect Garrett Oliver, as usual, is tweaking different batches of the same beer.
But the current version, from a very newly tapped keg, really impressed me. I think it’s Brooklyn’s best release since some of the early Black Choc Stouts. Well on style (quibble: mouthfeel’s just a tad thick), though I agree that Belgian yeast is a weird addition, but it worked for me.
It had the zingy/alive/three-dimensional yet crisp/dry/subtle character you want from a keller. Head a beautiful whipped cream. Finish to a one-pointed more-ishness. Aroma fresh and juicy.
I’d hate people to miss this beer. Just grab it quick, before it’s tweaked again, and try to be there right when the keg’s tapped!
