We know what youre thinking. You think weve lost our minds. Main Engine Start? Thats okay no worries but actually we havent lost anything at all. We just gained a new brewery here in Brooklyn. A few months ago, we busted through the brewhouse wall into another building and expanded our fermentation cellars. Now weve just finished installing a big shiny new set of German brewhouse equipment. Over the coming years, were going to brew you a lot of fun new beers on this baby.
First, though, its time to rev this whole thing up and get it humming. The first beer out of our new brewhouse is Brooklyn Main Engine Start, a burnished gold ale in the rare Abbey Singel style, reminiscent of the un-filtered beers that Trappist monks make for themselves. Its dry and biscuity on the palate, with a lilt of spicy Belgian yeast character and a snappy hop bite. Judicious dry hopping with Slovenian Aurora hops lends an appetizing herbal note. Its tasty enough to stick with for the whole evening, and at about 6% ABV, it wont have you tripping over snow banks after just one.
We know its winter and you might have been expecting something heavy and dark, but right now were just not in a heavy and dark mood. In fact, were feeling pretty cheerful, and we want to celebrate with a bunch of our friends and a few pints of beer. If youre in the neighborhood, stop by during our tour hours and see the new brewery. If youve seen the brewery before, youll be amazed what weve done with the place. Its cold outside stay a while. Were going for Main Engine Start.

Main Engine Start stats:
MALTS: British tworow, British Crystal Malt, Belgian Aromatic Malt, American Honey Malt.
HOPS: German Perle, British East Kent Golding, Slovenian Aurora
YEAST: Our special Belgian strain
ABV: 6.2%

Sampled at Lansdale Brew Fest 2011. Mahogany pour, some head. The aroma was yeasty and sugary. Lots of fruity esters in this one, banana like flavore and lots of yeast abound. Not a bad beer. Worth a try.

Clear amber color/ lasting ivory head. Fruity banana, belgian yeast, vanilla, mild ground polycarbonate aromas. Medium bodied. Light berry fruit, phenolic flavors with pale malt, spicy yeast--a little off but not too bad.

Tap. Cloudy golden with a frothy white head. Aroma of yeast, bread and some fruit. Similar taste, but both are pretty weak. Lively carbonation and soapy feeling body. Decent, but probably not something Id go for again.

Mmm. Thats tasty. Clear, dark amber. White head that lasts a few minutes. Nice belgiam yeast aroma with some breast sweetness. The flavor is full but sessionable, which is the coolest thing about this beer. Its fuzzy on the palate but this subsides quickly with each taste. The flavor is so well balanced. Everything comes together outside the glass.

(draught) clear golden, ring creamy bubbles. Nose of hairspray, Belgian yeast, candied citrus, ginger and coriander. Taste of candied citrus, bready, dry. Not very exciting. Dishrag citrus linger.

Appearance: clear coppers and blood oranges. Nice head fades into nothing. Slow steady stream of bubbles from first quaff to last.
Nose: yeasty, doughy, spicy, phenolic, and tropical. Green banana skins, papaya, and guava. Ginger and cumin for a solid kick of spice. Coconut husks. Raw dough.
Palate: clean, spicy, and yeasty. White pepper. Coconut husk, green banana skins, papaya, and guava. Lovely. Plantains in the back swallow, long and lingering. Ginger and cumin spice tickles back of throat. Tickle on top of tongue with bitterness of coconut husk, guava and papaya skins. Flavors melt together perfectly. Dryness is gentle and creates a welcome thirst for more.
Final Thoughts: another deliciously different and intriguing Brewmasters Reserve from the ever creative genius of Garrett Oliver and the Brooklyn Brewery.
