COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brooklyn Weizenhammer stands tall in the glass, radiating a hazy, deep golden hue and raising a pillowy white foam as beautiful as the songs of old. A big, brash weizenbock, the Weizenhammer smashes in with a rush of bold, juicy flavors and a bright zing of hops, then veers to a surprisingly dry finish. Another sip will beckon. Summer tomatoes will soar. Barbecue will be ennobled. Hamburgers will swoon. From spicy Mexican and Asian dishes to rich seafood, the pairings will inspire epic toasts that rattle off the rafters. Come and swing the Weizenhammer.

Fat.

Tap. Shakespeares, Sheffield. The occasion didn’t suit taking notes. Tasty gear, mind.

[Tap] Cloudy orange pour with a copious amount of head. Nice lacing lingers on the glass. Banana, clove, vanilla and sticky malts in the nose. Yeasty phenols, wheat malt, grains, lemon and sweet breads take center stage in the flavor. Creamy body. Effervescent carbonation. Tasting notes from 9/2014.

I really can’t get past the sweetness of this one. Loads of bananas and sugar. I’m pissed at the end of a 750ml bottle from Tru Bru, so that must be good, right?

On tap at Blue Monk in Buffalo, NY. Not sure how long this has been on, since Swoopjones below rated it 2 weeks ago. Regardless, I liked this a lot. Sweet, some banana, sweet fruits, with a decent creamy mouthfeel to it. Hazy golden-brown pour. I’m a sucker for a nice weizenbock so was pleased with this one. Went down well with dinner.....really hit the spot on a cold day.

Pint, shared by Andrew R at North High Brewery. He left me with ~65% of it. Pretty much entirely hazy golden orange color. Thin ring of off-white head. Great bigger banana ... almost an artificial level of banana, geez, there’s a lot of banana in here. Bigger body. Smooth, kind of crisp, lighter carbonation. Lightly slick. Moderate to bigger sweet taste, light bitter, kind of tart, with a mildly spicy edge to it. Aside from the slightly excessive sugary syrupy sweetness, I don’t mind it. Cool big banana aroma, spiciness, toasty malt, and burnt sugars. An alright weizenbock, but a bit subpar for what I expect from a craft example of the style. Losing some faith in Brooklyn specialties, lately, from what I’ve been trying. Weizenbock is a style that has a special place in my heart, and this is decent, but there are a lot of better examples. This one is too spicy, too syrupy sweet, a little forced, not much balance and nuance. A bit artificial tasting, you could say. I do appreciate how North High is serving this in pints, though... I think Weizen Bock is a style made for pints, but most people put them in snifters just because of the higher ABV. However this one may have made for a better sipper in a snifter, just because it’s excessively sugary and sweet. The pint is not swiggable, it does not have a balanced taste, like it should have. It’s worth noting, that by the time I finished this rate the head had faded to virtually nothing. Disappointing overall, for one of my favorite styles.
