On tap @ Brouemont.

Appearance: Slightly hazy nutty brown with a small beige head and little lacing.

Aroma: Toffee, caramel candies, quite sugary but not rich, light fruitiness (raisins, dates, figs) and light toasted notes.

Taste: Quite sweet and cloying with sugary caramelized apples, toffee, raisins, figs and light toasted malt.

Palate: Medium to full body. Moderate to medium carbonation. Sticky sugary finish with a bit of alcohol.

Overall: Way too sugary for my liking. Unbalanced and not easy to drink even for the style. Cloying. Not much malt depth or complexity despite all the sugars.

On tap at the brewpub. Opaque deep copper pour with thin white foam. Aroma is intensely malty, rich butterscotch, light toasted notes, raisins, dates, licorice. Taste is sweet, slightly cloying, lots of brown sugar, light maple. Palate is full bodied with light-med carbonation. Nice for a fan of really sticky ales, but I found it a bit too sweet.

Dark, smooth and a bit sweet A bit of stout by the end, served a bit cold at once, but once it reaches room temp, all its qualities explode and fill your senses

2 oz sample @ pub 06-08-09 , very dark brown little caramel nose, smoky, med body, no caramel.

Dark brown body with a small beige head. Toffee on the nose. Taste is full of thick caramel and brown sugar. Syrupy body. Obviously very sweet. Maybe a bit too sweet for me but I make that same comment about most scotch-ales. This one was more hopped than usual for the style and that was a welcomed diversion. Nice green grassy and leafy hops. I couldn’t ask for a better Scotch Ale from Brouemont. Although to be fair the main reason for that is that I cannot ask for another Scotch Ale from Brouemont.

Couleur rouge-rubis foncé, mousse compacte assez généreuse, claire. Arôme vineux, balsamique, réglisse, vanille. Très aigre, malt torréfié, légèrement amer, bien soutenue en alcool. Finale longue légèrement en alcool. Belle texture, pleine. Effervescence faible. Très bon.

Dark mahogany-chestnut color, with a beige head, but falling quickly, sweet toasted and caramelized malt nose, with some candied dark fruit of sultanas, plums, with a faint chocolatey note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a matly, bready, fruity character, with a chocolatey accent, with a plumy, raisiny mellow mouthfeel sweetness, and toffeeish, leading towards a lingering toasty-like fruitiness, and with an alcoholic warmth finish.

Sampled draught at the Mondial de la Bière, 2006. Very dark, hazy chestnut with a touch of lasting head and fine lacing....smoky, licorice-infused nutty-malty aromas, a bit acidic, lightly caramelized malts become hugely sweet and sugary with warmth....on the tongue, lots of interesting herbal/earthy currents, mineralic tones and a fairly dry overall profile for the style....still, it’s very full and rich, never syrupy despite the quite low carbonation, moderately sweet up till the dryish and lightly bitter finish....a bit of root beer/barky character makes this a very complex, inventive and atypical Scotch ale. I can’t say I’d want it every time I reach for the style, but I appreciate and applaud the effort.

heemer77 (5360) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - JUN 5, 2006
Sampled at Mondial 2006. Very dark brown body that is near copper. A light khaki head on top. The aroma is apple and smoke with some sweet wood and a little bit of toffee. The taste is smoky old toffee and caramel. There is also some maraschino cherries.
