On cask at The Dagda Bar. Pours a dark ruby colour with a decent, light tan head. Aroma of roasty malt, chocolate and caramel. Flavours of toffee, chocolate and treacle with a roasty malt finish. A little dry with mild carbonation and CO2 prickle. An oily mouth-feel also.

First tasted this in the Taproom, Glasgow in December 1998. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear dark ruby in colour with a thick creamy white head. Dark berry notes in the short fruity aroma. Thin mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malts give a good range of sweet flavours with dark plum, dark chocolate, ripe figs and soft toffee. Very little in the way of hop resins in the malty, fruity aftertaste. Finish is sweet with dry spicy shiraz notes along with vanilla oak. A good example of a Scottish winter ale.

Cask (gravity dispense) at the Pigs Ear Beer Festival, London on 6 December 2006. Deep ruby colour. Lightly malty aroma with some fruity accents. Stronger fruit on the palate - berries dominant. Lots of malt and no discernible hop presence leaves it feeling a bit unbalanced as far as Im concerned. Mouthfeel is mellow and sweetish but not too sticky, so retains an amiable drinkability.

Cask at the Magpie & Crown, Brentford, UK on 14th January 2011. Ruby with a white slippery head. Fruity, berries aroma. Spicy touches and smokiness together with a rich fruit palate. Zingy mouthfeel. Sweetish finish with some bitterness and smokiness, although front-mouth sweetness lingers in the aftertaste.

Cask at Wellington Arms, Bedford. Very dark amber with a small off white head. Sweet fruity aroma combining berry, a little citrus and some ashiness. Sweet malty taste, slightly medicinal, with a plummy sourness. Slight bitterness. Unusual and quite appealing.

Cask in the state bar. Aroma is quite sweet, hints of apple and grassy notes. Taste is similar, quite thin though which made it very drinkable.
