COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sans Pagaie is our take on the Belgian-style kriek, which is a traditional, sour blonde ale aged in barrels with cherries. The word "kriek" actually translates to "cherry" in the Flemish language. Sans Pagaie, our clever monicker for this beer, translates from French to "without a paddle" (see what we did there? Kriek/"without a paddle"..... hello, anyone out there?). The base beer has a subtle funk, which melds gently with the fruit giving this beer flavors reminiscent of coconut, vanilla yogurt and of, course, fresh cherries. A complex beer, perfect for a warm California day in the park with a slice of homemade cheesecake.
2015 vintage uses Balaton and Montmorency sour cherries.

Draft at Old Devil Moon. Clear bright rose red color with a small white head. Aroma is big cherry, vanilla, some lactic notes. Rich, full cherry flavor, medium tart, clean and crisp, dry with a touch of sweetness. Medium body, decent carbonation. Good one.

Bottle, shared with jercraig and mabel on their visit West. Light cotton-candy pink with a foamy white head. Sour cherry and acetic sourness, woody and spicy notes. Assertively sour, and the cherry character is very nice.

Super pink coloured body with an ultra-fast dying light pink and tannish coloured head that leaves nothing on top only seconds later. Light-bodied; Dry cherry flavour that leads to some hay and grassy elements than opens up wide to sour grapes, cherries, lemons, citrus and more yeastie funk, very nice and incredibly complex. Aftertaste shows mostly sour notes with the cherries and some dry oak hitting hard at first, then a more robust fruit sweetness with kiwi and strawberries noticeable and ending with the dry and funky yeast strain, but very nice. Overall, a very well-done and complex beer that shows a lot of cherry and sour flavours and a dry funky quality, coupled with some sweet notes that make this very nice all the way around. An offering definitely worth trying, even if it’s at a premium for the large-format bottle size, but i’m lucky to get mine on draught. I sampled this sixteen ounce pour on draught at Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 15-June-2017 for US$8,00, sampled at the end of my driveway.

750ml capped bottle pours a pinkish color with 2 fingers of fizzy light pinkish head that dissipates quickly leaving no lacing on the glass. Aroma is cherries and oak with some yeasty notes. Taste is a cherry tartness with a light hoppy and malty sweetness finishing with some oak and yeasty notes. Light bodied with abundant carbonation. Overall, a very tart brew that is only suitable for hardcore sour ale drinkers.

Bomber shared at KyotoLefty’s 10,000th rating celebration. Rich cherrry nose, some lactic notes, light barrel, and a bit of barnyard. Deep pink/orange color. Tart fruity initial, mild cherry, rhubarb. Melds nicely into a smooth finish. Well-made. Doesn’t go to far with th funk.

Bottle, shared at my 10K rating celebration. Tart cherry nose, some vinegar. Cloudy pale orange with lace. Great cherry flavor, almond // stone, nicely tart, crisp and actually quite sour.

Bottle shared by Alan I believe. I like the intense sweet fruity cherry aroma on this pink tinged gold. The taste is chalky cherry and pastry malts. Light bodied and very acidic.

Dry almost tannic cherry aroma and flavor with some oaky woody complexity. Sour maybe 4 or 5 of 10 and mostly lactic but also has some earthy aspects. Good but like some others slightly better

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/26/2016. Pours slightly hazy pinkish orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lace cap that lingers. Slight lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of huge sour cherry, raspberry, strawberry, lemon, orange zest, green apple, fruit skin, hay, straw, oak, almond, wheat, and bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, leathery funk, pepper, and white wine vinegar. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge sour cherry, raspberry, strawberry, lemon, orange zest, green apple, fruit skin, hay, straw, oak, almond, wheat, and bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, leathery funk, pepper, and white wine vinegar. Moderate fruity/lactic sourness and light yeast/tannic oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, berries, lemon, orange zest, green apple, fruit skin, hay, straw, oak, pepper, wheat, bread, and light leather/vinegar on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tannic/sourness balance. Lightly puckering, but not overwhelmingly astringent. Light-moderate dryness from acidity/tannins; increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, acidic/tannic, and fairly grainy/creamy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden, a slight warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible sour kriek style! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the elevated level of acidity. Awesome balance of fruit, Lacto, Brett, and oak flavors; with just enough malt to keep this from being overly puckering on sourness. A highly enjoyable offering.
