Bottle at home. "Een beetje vreemd, maar wel lekker." A Dutch saying which means something like: A bit weird, but tasty. Thats what I think of this beer. You must get used to the taste before youre gonna like it. I like it though.

From old tasting notes. Pale yellow gold colour. Thick mousse-like white head. Soft bitter citrus malt nose. Tart, dry yeasty malt flavor. There is an underlying fruitiness that lingers throughout. Finish is dry with a spicy cardamom hop character.

Een zeer goed smaak, donker gouden kleur, helderwitte schuimkraag. Zeer lekker dus.

Old bottle bought a while ago in the Bierloods, Adegem. Hazy blond colour, white foam. Aroma of caramel and hints of banana. Dry and notes of cardboard. Hmm, a bit too old to be good.

*Old rating, best before 12/05. Mild-trbes Bier. Etwas gewrzig-scharf, milde Hefe, frisch, mild-herb, ein wenig unrund.

The original Straffe Hendrik, taken over by Riva but discontinued when Riva went bankrupt. The Brugse Straffe Hendrik Tripel which later replaced it when the Halve Maan was reopened, is a very different beer: this original was a blond session ale with malty and light fruity profile with hints of apple, a somewhat metallic undertone and herbal hops in the finish. It was quite okay as a thirst-quencher, but nothing of great interest compared to the present-day tripel beer carrying this proud name.

330ml bottle
In short: a apicy belgian ale.
Pours hazy dark gold-orange, with frothy off white head. Good head retention and some lacing. Yeasty, fruity aromas. Medium body, average carbonation, some oily texture. Taste is fruity, some spicy and citrusy, yeast profiled. Alcohol noticeable. Enjoyable.

I first had this on drought in Brugges then found a bottle in NJ. The drought was definitely better but the bottle had a ton of floaters; poured ( into a trappist glass) a light golden orange color with a lot of chunky floaters and a thick white foamy head. Aroma was of alcohol and some yeast. Somewhat bitter with some orange or lemon in the back. Not bad, but Ive had a few much better Belgian Ales. Need to try the Brune and their Quad.
