Brugse Zot Dubbel is a dark brown beer, inclining towards ruby red. It is brewed with six special varieties of malt, which give the beer a rich and distrinctive aroma. One can discover the scent of honey, almonds, chocolate and brown sugar. By using the Czech Saaz hop from Zatec, the beer has a complex palate of roasted malts and a distrinctive flavour. Brugse Zot Dubbel is known to leave a warm glow in the mouth with a bitter and hoppy finish, leaning towards liquorice and coffee roast. Bottle conditioned.

Ingredients: water, barley malt, sugar, Saaz hops, yeast.

A dark amber pour with a khaki head. Very metallic and off-putting aroma. Tons of prune juice, some toasted malt, a hint of roast, and dark fruit sweetness. A bit of spice and yeast, too. The flavor is quite metallic as well. Very heavy on the roast and prune notes, which is not pleasing either. A bit of cocoa, some mild clove spiciness, and some toasted bread.

At Delaney’s, Bruges. On International Beer Day (August 4). Pours hazy brown with a lasting, small, tan head. The aroma contains roasted malt, dark chocolate, licorice, dark fruits, caramel, a bit of iron. It tastes medium sweet and light bitter with a light sweet finish. Medium body, slick, bit sticky texture, fizzy carbonation. Nothing special, but passed the minimal expectations. I prefer it over the blonde brother.

UPDATED: JUL 6, 2017 Bottle at Town Crier. Warm lightly reddish brown with off white head. Aromas of brown sugar, caramel, plums, but rather faint. Tastes of caramel, plum skin, some toffee, malt. More bitter than expected. Highly carbonated. A decent dubbel. This is the beer that gave me the jester bottlecap.

330ml bottle from the Elm Tree, Cambridge. Reddish brown, very translucent. A smooth khaki head sits cheekily on top. Black cherry and chestnut dominate the aroma, with suggestions of dark chocolate and Chambord. Sweet taste with cherry notes. Very fruity with a nutty yeasty flavour. A bit of tartness in the finish. Perfect carbonation. A joy to drink.
