In 2005 Xavier Vanneste, son of Mrs Véronique Maes, renovated and restarted the old brewery which had been in the family since 1856. He launched Brugse Zot, a new beer with a unique recipe. Today Brugse Zot is the only beer brewed in Bruges’ town centre!
The people of Bruges are known as "Brugse Zotten" (Bruges Fools), also known as "Brugse Jonckers"

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2011 Re-Rate at Bluebird. Vastly better this time. Lots of citrus and soft Belgian esters. Much more fresh and robust. Pops with hoppy character. Big upgrade. Bottle sampled at Glunz Expo. Pours a cloudy yellow-brown. Nose is restrained, pils malt and slightly phenolic. On taste, pretty bland. I’m having a hard time pulling anything particularly distinctive out. Lack character. Meh.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2011 Bottles from The Cave & Beers of Europe. Sweet fruity, yeasty & malty aroma. Golden amber colour with a frothy head. Sweet, flowery, fruity malt flavour. Great artwork and history. One of my favourites.

On tap in SF at La Trappe Belgian Restaurant. Nice head. Very smooth for a strong beer. Had a malty aftertaste that kept me wanting more.

Fratto (2845) - Arlington, Texas, USA - MAR 12, 2010
Bottle from the Eastchase Majestic. Greenish yellow pour with a huge white head and lots of floaters. Aroma is yeast, spice, and banana. Taste is spice, yeast, and must.

Cavie (4718) - Arlington, Texas, USA - MAR 12, 2010
Bottle courtesy of Fratto. Hazy golden yellow color with plenty of yeast left in the pour. Tall white foamy head. Huge Belgian yeast aroma. Lots of banana and dry fruit. Very present aroma. Tastes of the same fruits. Dry finish with slight bittering notes. Remains quite tasty.

Tasted at the Zythos beer festival, Belgium.
Poured clear with a creamy, small lacing white head. Aroma of some spicy coriander, malts and belgian yeast. Medium bodied one with a malt based flavor, spicies and some belgian yeast character. Easy drinkable blond one.

Yeast and kibble aroma. Cloudy orange with huge chunks of sediment, medium head. Tart flavor, slight grassiness, with a horehound finish. Harsh mouthfeel. Not a lot of character. Not bad tasting and the yeast chunks seem to have little effect on flavor, but it’s boring otherwise.

Smells musty, like a basement. Pours golden with a nice head and lacing. Light and orange-citrusy with a light hop finish.

Confusing smell with bread, citrus and leaves. Extremely clear with a minimal white head. Pleasant balance of sweet and sour. Very light body with little after-taste. Nice if you’re up to something not to complex.

Rciesla (5499) - Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA - FEB 11, 2010
Bottle. Pours a hazy golden body with a white head. Sweet initally with hints of sugar cane, some light citrus and a lightly tart lemon finish. Soft carbonation with a mild body and a decent citrus finish. Okay.
