Bottle. Nice honey pour, slightly murky, strong carbonation generous soapy and dense foam head. Strong sour, yeasty aroma typical for this style. Grains, hint of lemon, hay. Overall a nice balance. The gluten-free follow-up to the organic Brunehaut Bio Blonde, which is in turn the offspring of the Original, non-organic Brunehaut Villages Blonde from the previous owners of this Wallonian micro brewery. Bottle from a Prik & Tik in Zele. Membranous lacing, off-white, frothy, dense and stable, beaten egg-like head, leaving a steady rim on the edge and otherwise remaining nearly closed for most of the time; misty straw blonde colour with slightly orangey ’old gold’ hue. Aroma of biscuit, withering garden weeds, old wrinkled apples, old dry cake, green tea, chalk, broccoli cooked ’al dente’, rotting grass, stewed green cabbage (but not in the DMS sense), ripe pear, fresh vegetable soup or even green tomato, tulips, honey, freshly grated ginger, hay and something sulfuric not unlike burnt rubber, freshly struck old-fashioned matches or even old car tyres, strong ’band aid’. Crisp onset, lots of green apple peel, unripe gooseberry and immediately something vegetable-like (raw broccoli), sweetish and sourish with a very vague umami accent, spritzy with somewhat distracting carbo but fit for the ’Belgian blonde’ style, supple malt core, a tad bready and grainy, bit biscuity in terms of sweetness, fruity esters continuing but not overdone and actually being overpowered by strong phenols eventually resulting in a rubbery and notably band aid-like flavor retronasally, medicinal in an almost chemical kind of way, mixed with old vegetable soup-like aromas, while underneath all that, nothing more happens: there is a hint of grassy, hayish or even green tea-like hops but instead of providing the much-needed bitterness, they mostly provide retronasal aromas which do not match all too well with the already off-putting band aid-like off-flavor. Dryish ending still, but malt sweetness, albeit in a rather ’thin’ form, crosses the finish line first. The old band aid-like odor, with a cooked broccoli-like aspect to it, bothers me more and more as the bottle progresses and eventually makes me consider to pour this beer down the drain... Apart from illustrious exceptions à la Dupont Saison Biologique and a few others, organic beers have always failed to convince me, and this one, adding to the concept in being gluten free, does not help - on the contrary, that car tyre- and band aid-like aroma seems to get stronger and stronger as more of the yeast sediment goes into the glass, eventually becoming almost intolerable. I had the tripel and amber versions last year and I cannot say I liked them, but this blonde version is way worse. Apart from the fact that Belgium really does not need another blonde in general, this is not well executed to begin with; I am unable to blame the organic ambitions for that at this point, but at the same time I suspect a non-organic version teeming with gluten would be way better than this. Pours fairly clear golden, topped witha huge gushing white head. Mild malty aroma, a hint of fruits and some cellar cidery notes. Slightly yeasty start, a hint of soury feel then comes more yeastiness. Light body. Nothing special.
