Black Bird is our collaboration with London-based Anspach & Hobday, a young brewery that is reviving classic styles while keeping them as simple & elegant as possible. A black rye season brewed with rye to bring a dry and spicy mouthfeel reminding of british bitters. You can also put on the celeb Beattles track ... Black Bird singing in the dead of night. Take these sunken eyes & learn to see!

DraftMaestro2 (75) - Whiteley, Hampshire, ENGLAND - DEC 13, 2017
UPDATED: DEC 13, 2017 Bottle from Bitter Virtue. Pleasant black beer. Would have struggled to spot the rye or the Saison components

maekchu (4202) - Hirakata, JAPAN - SEP 18, 2017
Bottle from World Beer Market (Sake no Taniguchi). Floral nose, with cocoa, cola, light spice, mild pepper, and a bit of smoke. Very dark translucent brown with reddish edges and a a fluffy tan head. Dryish sort of initial flavor of dark fruit, some wheat, dark sugar. Quite spicy and bitter in mid palate. Medium body, with high carbonation -- a bit foamy sort of mouthfeel. A very different kind of saison, and it doesn't really work as that style. But it is interesting as a hybrid (.... learn to see.)

Bottle @cgarvie (1st May, the May Day Tasting, rating backlog). Pours almost black, off white head. Nose is fruit cake and banana bread. Taste is toffee, chocolate, spices and pepper.

UPDATED: AUG 6, 2017 Pours looking like a stout and isn't dissimilar. A roast malt cocoa flavour with an undertone of charcoal. Very smooth mouth feel. Very enjoyable.

Bottle, [email protected], Grobbendonk. Pours deep black with a medium, staying, frothy off-white head. Aroma has sweet malts, light grapefruit, fine hops. Highish carbonation, very dry and light creamy mouthfeel. Flavour has mild sweetness, quite bitter, not much sugar left. Light peppery, mild roasted. It is a bit of a freakish style, but it is actually quite drinkable.

Bottle at Hair of the Dog, Phrom Phong, Bangkok. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy, short lived light tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, smoky charcoal. The flavour is light liquorice bitter with a dry roasty, smoky malt, yeast, floral, liquorice, hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Really quite disappointed with this. A "saison" ? No way. Way too light and lacking any defining flavours. This was mildly infected too. This is a super expensive beer in Bangkok and I expect better than this.

CraftBeerNick (3108) - London Town, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUN 18, 2017
Bottle in garden, 17th June 17. Pours a black beer with a frothy head. Aroma is malty, yeast, cocoa. Taste is watery, malt, cocoa, slight bitter, liquorice. A bit messy and strange, but drinkable.
