Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a sturdy dark burnt orange almost orange color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a slow pace. Slight lace.
The aroma had some caramel/toffee malts up front and then a nice earthy/grassy hop blend with some orange pulp sweetness and dark fruits. Light woodiness and a little bit of leather and tobacco also make a small play underneath.
The flavor dryly moved the malts into the hops somewhat sweet with a touch of bitterness at the end. Aftertaste was moderately sweet with a dry malty finish.
The palate was medium bodied with a good sipping quality about it. Low key carbonation and the ABV felt good.
Overall, pretty good old ale that I could have again. tronraner (2459) - Walland, Tennessee, USA - OCT 8, 2007
Draft at Bubes. Pours bright amber with small off-white head. The aroma is bready with some dark fruits and bergamot orange. The flavor has some light caramel, plum, and even a little bit of bitter chocolate. It finishes with red grapes and a bit of grainy bitterness. Draft at Brewpub. Poured a light copper shade with no head. Light carbination. Tasted like a english pale ale. Not sure what makes this an "old ale". Not too impressed. I’d like to try again to see if I missed something. mkobes (2142) - paramus, New Jersey, USA - JUL 5, 2005

This was a lot like bubes red ale. This one was a bit stronger (7.2%) slight dry and spicy taste. nothing too special. obxdude10 (2324) - Pottstown, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 19, 2004
Very similar to an APA or even an IPA, copper color with a very generous off-white head, excellent lacing around the glass, big hoppy nose, very hoppy flavors as well, dry & spicy, notes of earth & grass, good malt profile to balance it all out, dry & warming effect in the finish & aftertaste, great ale
