3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
August 17th, 2012 - Aha! Here’s the beer from Swan’s Hotel that makes the whole taster flight worth it. If you look at a history of my beer samples, you’ll see the whole line - up until this moment - has been a collection of disappointments. But the Scotch Ale is the savior, kilted and wielding the grand claymore of flavor. As scotch ales tend to do, it tastes very much like a scotch ale, and tilts towards the sweeter side of the flavor spectrum, with a wonderfully rich bread savoriness and a a satisfyingly sweet layer of molasses. The alcohol lends this ale a heavy booziness too, which gives a one-two punch with the low attenuation and sweetness with this brew. Whereas most of Swan’s stuff has been flimsy and stale, the Scotch Ale is vibrant and thick with flavor - a nice change of pace, and at last, a reason to visit an otherwise quaint pub setting.

Verbatim from notes 16JUL11
Caramel ale with brilliant clarity, no head, no lace. Nose has lots of tea smells and hints of malt and some floral tones. Tastes oxidized and bitter. the bitterness is more like and ESB than a scotch or wee heavy. Some floral characters from the hops. Thin body with moderate carb. Not very good.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Light to medium aromas over a dark brown pour. Rather flat with lack of carbonation and head. Good malt flavours leading to any equally good palate highlighting malt. A well balanced beer with nice colour and a good example of a scotch ale. The high level of alcohol doesn’t overpower.

On tap at Swans in Victoria. Aroma is bready, malty barley and flavor of a nice, rich Wee Heavy. It ain't the best of the genre, but it was the best beer I had in Victoria.

Tap. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy tan head that was mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted malt and earthy aroma. Medium body with smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted sweet flavor with a medium to heavy toasted sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Very enjoyable brew
