The Hippie I.P.A. continues to be the Buckeye Brewing Companys best selling beer. First brewed in the summer of 98, the Hippie has become a Cleveland classic among hop lovers. Reminiscent of ales brewed on the Pacific west coast, the Hippie I.P.A. is big, rich in malt and chock full of hops. American malts are used in the grain bill, including pale ale, crystal, dextrin malt and torrified wheat. It is hopped five times with a combination of Northern Brewer and Cascade. After fermentation, hops are added dry to impart bold hop aroma. The Hippie starts at 1.068 and is 80 IBUs.

Picked up at Belmont Party Supply in Dayton, Ohio on a trip from IL back to NC. Awesome beer store. Lightly hazy amber pour with a 1-finger white head. Can smell aroma of piney hops from 2 feet away. Great balance of a deep caramel/sweet malt backbone and piney citrusy hops. Smooth finish, easy to drink a bomber to yourself. I want more!

On draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear copper with an off white head. Aroma of pine. Flavors of mandarin orange and caramel. Moderately bitter finish.

22 oz. bottle purchased at Buckeye Brewing Co.s Tapstack, Cleveland, OH. Dark orange pour with a short off-white head. Aroma of wet grass, faint citrus, and damp pale malt. Decent flavor with hop forward tangerine and grassy hops but there is plenty of sweet, almost sugary, caramel and toffee malt to be found as well. A little too sweet for an IPA as far as I am concerned but by no means a bad beer.

Aroma: Rich floral and resin hops. Appearance: Light amber with a light head. Taste: Medium bitterness throughout. Palate: Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation, soft finish. Overall: This is interesting. Theres big aroma of hops, but in the flavor, its mellowed and much more drinkable than many of the more acerbic IPA offerings. The balance is intriguing, and theres enough there to catch my attention.

Caramel in color... Minimal hop aroma... Nice malty flavor, decent hop balance... Not terribly hoppy but a decent IPA

Bottle brought back from Ohio. Orange pour with large fluffy off-white head. Citrus hop and caramel aroma. Caramel malts balanced well with the hop bitterness in the taste. Good clean bitter and toast in the finish.

22 oz. bottle from notes. Pours a hazy deep amber color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor had floral hops, lightly toasted bready malts, caramel, orange citrus, hints of pine, grapefruit. Medium bodied. Better than I thought this would be as I may have found a pretty fresh bottle.

Hate to say it but just not my cup of tea. Lots of malt and sweetness and just wasnt looking for that. Not super toasted but a bitter finish. Ok overall.

Bottle thanks to fatknitty. Pours a mostly clear copper-amber with a medium off-white head. Aroma is citrus, some tropical fruit, fruit-flavored candy, and some bready malt. Taste is medium sweet, medium bitter, quite malty. Bitter finish. Nice, big, atypical IPA.

Wow... this beer had a freakishly active level of carbonation. It took a half hour to pour this beer before my wife and I were able to drink it. It looks slightly hazy, with a dark/medium pale orange color and an off-white, wickedly billowy head. The lacing is thick and frothy, and looks like its sticking to the glass with super glue. The nose is clean and lightly hopped with somewhat fruity, with Cascade hops dominating. Gently. In the mouth, well, Im actually feeling a little let down here. My wife thinks its skunky, but I think its just... odd. Cascade greets the tongue as it enters the mouth, followed closely behind by rich caramel malts. Its body feels just a little too full, and it makes that caramel feel very heavy on the palate. Its good, dont get me wrong, but where it seems odd to me is mostly in the finish, which is bitter - just lacking. Theres definitely a strong yeast character that seems to have stuck around. Most likely this excessive yeast was also to blame for the beers excessive carbonation. Maybe a thinner body and higher alcohol would help... or maybe less caramel malts. Or maybe a different yeast strain. Im not sure, exactly, where this is off, but it could go in a few directions for improvement. Its definitely a heavy IPA. Good, but misses the mark.
