Had a whole lot of this beer on draft as I was pouring for Bull & Bush at GABF. This was my favorite of their lineup there. The appearance is a thick medium nut brown color, and a large two-finger yellowish head sits on top of the beer. Amazing aroma of caramel, toffee, port wine, sweet cherries, oak, and whiskey. Really a heavenly smell, similar to Angel’s Share or something of the like. The flavor is a little over-the-top sweet, but other than that it’s amazing. Big-time caramel malts and sweet toffee, candied dates, sugar plums, and cherries, with a subtle and well-integrated whiskey barrel note. Very decadent. Thick and rich on the mouthfeel with average carbonation, full body, and a slick, oily texture. An excellent -bal aged barleywine. I really love this style, and this is a great example of it. Bottle: Poured murky brown bubble. Sticky caramel, bourbon and sweet. Sweet stick caramel, hidden alcohol and malty. koleminer20 (3591) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - FEB 6, 2017
From notes. Bottle shared with ebone1988, Gus, and Aaron at Gus’ Birthday V2. 500 mL bottle. The pour is a darker brown-ish ruby color with a thin ring of lighter tan head that lingers from top to bottom, not leaving any lace behind. The aroma is really good. The dark fruit complexity right off the bat really sets the tone. There is a heavy caramel and molasses sweetness to go with it, and a light alcohol and touch of spicy whiskey barrel. The light vanilla comes through, and the balance on this is awesome. The flavor is even better. The fruits and molasses really start off with a bang, letting the sweet caramel come in with the spicy whiskey barrel and a hint of vanilla just follows it up. Amazing. The mouth feel is a little light and oily with a softer carbonation and a lingeringly sweet molasses and whiskey finish. I like this one, a lot! luckygirl (1223) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 14, 2007
Sampled at the 5th Annual Boulder Strong Ale Fest. Beer is nearly opaque dark brown without any head to speak of.

The aroma is malty with moderate notes of smokey roasted grain and chocolate, light notes of biscuit, molasses and malt syrup; Hoppy with trace notes of tangy herb; Yeasty with a trace of basement; Light-to-moderate miscellaneous notes of cherry/berry, wood and burbon, trace note of roasted coconut.

The flavor is moderately-to-heavily sweet, lightly bitter with an average-length, moderately sweet finish.

The body is full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is soft.

Desserty and rich. Luxe, complex and sweet. Enjoyable. jimbowood (1036) - Freeport, Georgia, USA - OCT 16, 2007
2005 vintage on tap @ the BP. I like hot brews, but this one was perhaps too hot w/ whiskey. Very reminiscent of Alpine Great. Good, but a little too hot. Needs a little aging and it will be really good.

Dark brown in color, clear with a thin head. Big sweet aroma oak barrel and whiskey aroma. This was very sweet bourbon flavored with a big alcohol finish. This would be a perfect after dinner drink.
500 mL bottle. Murky brown with a reddish tinge. Lots of bourbon. Very oaky and nutty bourbon aroma. Boozy and a little bit of brown sugar. Taste is also a ton of bourbon. Really strong bourbon and oak. Brown sugar behind it. Some vanilla in the back end. Lingering bourbon and booze. Medium heavy. Very boozy, but not very sweet, which I appreciate. bleeng (1682) - Seattle still not near Beersel., Washington, USA - DEC 15, 2007
2005 vintage served during the 2007 GABF. Solid black pour with no head. Nose of malt, chocolate, caramel, alcohol. Very smooth and a bit carbonated. Taste is sweet, chocolately, and the alcohol is well hidden for this monster beer. Almost too drinkable and dangerous. madmitch76 (24789) - , Essex, ENGLAND - JUN 5, 2011

On tap at the brewpub. Hazy amber brown beer. Low carbonation. Sweet thick barleywine with hints of vanilla wood. Very smooth indeed. Dangerously easy drinking!
