Loved the name and the description. The beer however...not so much. Really really wanted to like this, being a huge Willy Wonka fan (the original, not the Johnny Depp blasphemy). But just couldn’t.
Clean reddish copper pour with one finger of light tan head. Nose is a weird blend of pepper flesh and chocolate. No peppers mentioned in description. Weird flavor, tastes like a pepper beer. Some toasted grain and cacao. Sharp. Light bodied and dry. JCB (3999) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - AUG 8, 2012
On tap at the brewpub, Durham. Pretty much the same impression that Sam had. Apparently they’re using the Wonka Wash name as a placeholder for their one-offs? Well, the chocolate certainly fits the appellation I guess. But as a beer it was pretty disappointing, with a weak consistency, a kind of sorry Tootsie Roll nose, and a flavor that melded weak tea with old power bars. Tap At BCBB. Pours a copperish, muddy brown with a light white head. Nose is strong dark fruits, dates and figs in particular, some grainy cocoa. Flavor is akin to English style fruit cake, some nuttiness, light nutella, more dates. Weird and a much different beer from last years wonka wash spelled backwards.
