COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed in Belgium's famous Trappist style, this ale starts with a complex fruity aroma of rasins, rum, toffee, and spice. On the palate the dark rich malts explode in a burst of effervescence that cuts through the sweetish middle to reveal a dry, slightly winey finish.

Nate (4279) - Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 15, 2007
On tap at the brewery. Sweet malty roasted grains with light fruity esters and a nice bit of hops presence. Dark amber clear with and off-white lacing head. Medium-heavy watery body with medium carbonation. Great malt start, sweet with heavy malt presence, red licorice, mild diacetyl, some molasses and candi sugar. A bit of ozone burn which is odd, but overall a good sweet dubbel with some estery yeastiness.

Sampled at the DC Ratebeer Gathering. 750ml bottle pours a translucent, copper amber with one ring of white head. Big apple cider aroma, a little vinegar, sweet, fruity, pears. Flavor is tart, apples, pears, vinegar, light crystal malt, light caramel. Full bodied, vinegar finish.

craftycarl21 (2338) - Seattle, Washington, USA - OCT 17, 2011
Sampled at GT’s birthday tasting. Mahogany pour with a small head. Nose of candied sugar, plum, raisin, and fig. The flavor holds big candied fig, overripe apple, plum, and vinous red wine. Quite nice but not earth-shattering.

3.9
MrChopin (4304) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - OCT 9, 2011
dark nut brown, thick beige head that lasts. Nose is dates, candi sugar, lightly tart lacto, balanced though. Flavor more so, would border on infected but soft carbonation and presence of raisin, candi, prunes, plums. Very balanced and refreshing, good as a dubbel with a refreshing lacto touch. Terry’s touch is noticeable.

Drake (13652) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - OCT 9, 2011
Bottle shared by MrChopin. End of the bottle so the pour was a bit of a murky brown. Tart earthy aroma, berries, stone fruits, toasted malts, must and grapes. Also smelled a pour from earlier in the bottle which was more caramel and raisin forward. The taste is cranberries, earthy notes, caramel and a bitter finish. Medium bodied. Decent.

Dark brown pour with a medium beige head. Candied dark fruits, caramel, and hints of cider culminate with doughy cherries and hints of rotten / overripe cider. Medium to full body with low carbonation and a sticky finish.

Dark fruit and light toffee nose with lots dough and light milk chocolate. The taste is light to moderately sweet, lots of cola, some toffee, lots of rum raisin. Just a tad tart, with some light berry.

Bottle shared by MrChopin. Pours hazy brown with a medium, fizzy light tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is caramel and toast malt, raisin and prune, cedar, caramel and cookie malt, fruity esters, and no hops. Flavor is lightly tart, raisins and prunes, cookie and caramel malt, cedar notes and a dry finish. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation.

750mL c&c thanks to MrChopin. Pours a clear reddish amber with a small, yellow head. Small retention. Nose is fresh citrus, oddities, small olive, salt, lime. Taste is tart, moderately sour, with red wine character. Very nice actually with lactic acid and lemon lime. Refreshing, quite tart. Interesting.

A: The pour is a dark amber, perhaps copper, with a short lived tan head. S: Nice caramel and malt notes, some bread in there as well. Definitely a lot of apples, sort of like cider. It smells quite oxidized as there is a bit of cardboard to it as well. T: Mild dark fruits such as raisins and plums. Toffee, bread, and caramel. There is a hint of spice notes from the yeast as well as some of the cider notes that were present on the nose. More of the oxidization and cardboard here as well, too. M: Medium in body with a moderate carbonation. O: Seemed incredibly oxidized and not all that good. Interesting to try, though.
