UPDATED: NOV 28, 2010 On tap at Capone’s Black Friday beer event. Clear dark amber with no head. Lots of candy notes, sweet but not overpowering, maple, oak, caramel. Simply fantastic!

From notes. Enjoyed at the 4th Annual Barleywine Tasting at Nicole’s house on January 28. 750 mL bottle, 2008 vintage. I wonder where the hell someone kept this thing for the last 9 years… The pour is a darker coppery amber with a thin ring of light khaki head that vanishes pretty quickly. The aroma is really strange. There is a nice oak, a hint of whiskey, some light booziness, and a little bit of grape, or grape skins. I’m not sure where that’s coming from, but it’s not awful. The flavor is much of the same. There is a little more caramel and chocolate malt to join the whiskey, oak, and that grape thing. I don’t know what’s causing it, but it’s different, and it doesn’t make me want to vomit. The mouth feel is watery and light with a sharper carbonation and a lingeringly sweet booze with a hint of fruit. This is a very interesting bottle.

At the Barleywine event. 2008 vintage. Aroma is barrel, grape gum, booze, eh. Appearance is amber brown, light tan head, clear. Taste is grape soda, booze, oak, caramel, bad. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, grape booze aftertaste. Overall, very bad.

Cloudy dark red - brown beer. Malty nose. Neutral palate, low carbonation. Rich malt with a light touch of chocolate. The oaking is light providing a little softness and sweetness. Plummy fruit and aniseed alcohol in the semi dry finish. Not the best of BA Barleywines but alright.

2008 bottle. Cracked this aged beauty for Annie’s Birthday. Pours a plum red color with thin head and equidistant spotted lacing, never seen the spacing between lacing so uniform...kind of eerie. They almost resembled small gunshots in my glass. Aromas and taste of cherry, vanilla, chocolate, fruit rollup, cinnamon, toffee, dark grapes, cocoa powder, bourbon whiskey. Soft as silk mouth, exceptional barleywine, so much going on with it. Had stout, barley, and quad notes in it, very complex. One of the best barleys I have had.

UPDATED: FEB 12, 2012 Bottle. Bomber. 2008 Vintage. Huge thank you to my buddy Vinny for this rare beauty. Pours a bloody mahogany with a tuft of khaki, thinly-bubbled head. Specked out lacing. Aroma of sour dark cherries, malted milk balls, caramel, soft, supple notes of whiskey, toffee, molassess, and some lovely lactosey, milky notes in the back. Huge, warm, soft body with a liquid silky mouthfeel; this beer has probably the best palate of any beer I’ve tasted thus far. Taste is full of dark cocoa, sour dark cherries, vanilla, toffee, doughy bread, fine, aged whiskey, and some caramel and butterscotch notes in the finish. Big, soft, and welcoming, Old Toad is the epitome of what a barley wine should be and a true treasure to drink. The aging has surely done it a tremendous service as well, and, suffice it to say, time has treated it well. Superb.

750ml, caged and corked bottle. Poured a mahogany color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of wood, caramel, and dark fruits. Tastes of dark fruits, whiskey, wood, vanilla, brown sugary sweetness, and some nuttiness. Warming finish.

Dark purple/red pour with a small head. Nose and flavor hold nice plum, raisin, candied orange slice, yeast, and booze. The alcohol is very prevalent on the tongue but I’m totally fine with that. Decent, not awesome.

Bottle shared by MrChopin. Pours a clear copper color with a thin head. Decent head retention. Aroma of toffee, plum, spice, earthy notes and berries. The taste is toffee, anise, wood, vanilla, brown sugar and a peppery note. Full bodied. Nice beer right up my alley.
