Lipreader is brewed every year for the winter season. Loads of crystal malt and a dash of Swedish alder-smoked malt make the backbone around which the recipe changes every year. The 2015 edition has taken the guise of an early 20th century-style Burton ale, a forgotten beer style that used to be a favourite winter seasonal in Britain. A rich, malty, full-bodied beer with a fruity and somewhat spicy character, with distinct hops and molasses notes along with that woody smokiness that is the hallmark of this beer.

(Butcher’s Tears Lipreader 2015) Tap at the brewpub, 250ml, served into a snifter, ABV 7% Dark amber to brown colour on the body, hazy, tall and thick dark tan head, with average retention. Aroma of rye, faint caramel, funk. Taste is mildly sour, with a funk character, wood and cork, brett like notes, alcohol, faint caramel, dried grass. Medium thin body, good carbonation, dry on the palate. Not bad at all.

MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: fruity start, wood notes, tannins, bit sweet, brett notes, apples. Aftertaste: little sweet, caramel, red liquorice, hoppy, citrus, soft bitterness, sourish.

From 0.33 l bottle at ’HOPPA!’, bottled in November 2015. Slightly hazy, brownish amber with a thin, frothy, tan head. Sweetish-malty, spicy aroma of licorice, aniseed, fennel and some vegetables. Sweetish-malty, very spicy taste of caramel, licorice, tea, aniseed, fennel and some vegetables, followed by a short, slightly bitter, yeasty-spicy finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Awful. Don’t like it all.

On tap at Butcher’s Tears, Amsterdam. Body is opalescent amber, head is big, beige, rocky, mostly lasting, excellent lacing. Nose is citric, spicy, flavor is flora, hemp, honey, tropical fruits, spices. Medium sweet, medium bitter, light fruity sour. Finish is medium lasting hoppy medium bittersweet, light alcohol warmth. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Quite easy dessertish beer, a bit sweet for me, but tasty.
