Bottle. Hazy red-orange with little head. Rusty chewy aroma is earthy, minerally, with lots of fruit after that and caramelized backed apples. Chewy mouthfeel. Caramelized dough, oat bran muffin, and metallic. Not my thing. daknole (11402) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - FEB 12, 2009
Bottle. Cloudy amber pour. Small head. Aroma has some sweetness with notes of honey balanced by some citrus hops. Flavor is well balanced. Sweet honey notes, apple juice, and hops come together very well. It was a tiny bit hot, but not enoug to stop me from really enjoying it. ditmier (1508) - Boise, Idaho, USA - FEB 5, 2009
2008 Bottle - Last bottle of the tasting so notes are a bit scribbley...Pours reddish amber with a medium off white head...aroma is high fruit, high citrus hop...flavour is pretty straight forward, 1-2 punch of pine and caramel malt...definite fire in this bottle that may or may not mellow, but good to try... Very pungent malty aroma. Not a bad aroma. A big haze look with this beer. Not much head on it. Whoa, a very strong taste of alcohol. I generally like some malt with my alcohol, but the alcohol just blasts my tongue. It doesn’t have a horrible taste, but it is not good. I just think the alcohol taste is not hidden at all. I have had strong barley wines, with 12+ abv, but there were other flavors. This one just has an alcohol bitterness, not even a hop bitterness. I just think they missed when it came to using hops and malts. Floback (550) - Indianapolis, Indiana, USA - DEC 7, 2008
Bottle from Whole Foods. Pours an opaque orange amber with oily, spotty lacing and a tiny rim of froth for a head. The aroma is sweet with citrus and piney hops. Flavors are blatantly boozy with a strong alcoholic presence and notes of pine resin, subtle caramel, nuts, and green apple. Medium carbonation and full body. Not bad, but they could have tried to hide ther ABV better for an easier drink.

Pours an appetizing clear brownish copper with a thick, frothy head that sticks around for a bit. Aroma is strong and malty with a brandy-ish fruit overtone. Flavor has an undertone of molasses, as well as smoky and nutty hints - and the typical strong alcohol bite of a barleywine. Texture is fairly edgy, and it leaves a rather bitter, hoppy aftertaste. doubleo (1432) - San Diego, California, USA - NOV 19, 2008
22oz bottle. This beer was surprisingly good. Pours clearish brown/red with a slow building, frothy, offwhite head with good retention and spider web lace. Smells spicy hoppy and caramelly malty sweet. A bit of alcohol on the nose as well. Tastes malty and sweet caramelly with a healthy dose of spicy hop flavors. Pretty hot, lots of alcohol flavor. Pretty solid, classic BW. Full body, good carbonation. nearbeer (5600) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - OCT 15, 2008
650 ml. Clear, darkish copper with a lasting one-inch foam that leaves a delicate lacing behind. Aroma of butterscotch, sharp grain (like rye), earthy peat and toasted nut. Flavors of toffee, peat, cherry liqueur, pecan, oak and apple. Big aftertaste of bitter wood and pith is a bit harsh. Medium body is silky smooth, and tingly-peppery dry with alcohol, roast malt and bitter-pithy hops. Fairly complex aroma and flavors, but somehow they don’t seem to mesh as well as they should to be an outstanding BW. Gorbalev (3000) - Ontario, CANADA - AUG 28, 2008
Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, Jerc, Mabel, and GregClow, Harry’s bottle, last beer of the night. Deep dark orange, small white head. Grain, hops, lots of malt, in aroma. Great taste - alcohol, tons of hops, huge astringent linger - a very nice flavourful hoppy barleywine. I really enjoyed it! robforbes (2266) - Bremerton, Washington, USA - AUG 15, 2008
caramel/copper in color with a medium dirty white head.
smell of roasted nuts, spice, some pepper, caramel, barley, some cocoa in the back.
taste is grainy, some nuts, some caramel, and that organic funk.
i was really happy with this, the look, the smell, then when i tasted it i could not believe that i tasted "organic" and sure enough when i checked the bottle it was organic.
