BrewDog Collabfest 2013.
Craft beer is all about pushing the boat out and where better to do that than on the 7 Cs? Our Nottingham team set out to design a beer that was innovative and interesting while remaining accessible and tasty. So they decided to brew a (slightly paradoxical) Black Pale Ale; taking the big, bold, citrus hop character of an American Pale Ale and pairing it with the dark, chocolatey body of a Porter or Stout.

Brewed with rye, oats and wheat for a big, thick mouthfeel; and a collage of 7 different hops beginning with the letter C. Challenger and Cluster for bittering; Citra, Centennial, and Cascade for aroma; dry-hopped with Columbus and Chinook.

Keg at BD Shoreditch on Collba Fest. It pours dark brown with a nice light brown head. Aroma is very complex: a lot of citrus and grapefruit, also some toffee, pine and melon. Well balanced between the citrus/pine finish and the darker roasted elements. Very good.

Draft at BrewDog Camden on 19 October. Poured black with a medium tan head and good lacing. Aroma of dark berries, tart fruits and dark malt. Crisp, grassy hop flavours with brown sugar and bready malt. Finish is burnt malt, hop resin and some earthiness.

[keg, BrewDog Edinburgh] Blackish pour with a thin cream-coloured head. Aroma is mostly hefty piney resin, with some chocolate. On the taste, woody, chocolate, pine and a finish that bumps the resin up even more. Despite this, though, the oily edge at the end suffers from a lack of body it needs more backbone to be great. Still gets to the good bracket, though, but falls short of the next level [19102013]

Black in colour. Has a very fruity, hoppy aroma with some tropical fruits too. The flavour has fresh, fruity hops then roasted dark malts. These elements combine to deliver a lasting bitter finish.

Keg at BrewDog Shoreditch, London during the big collaboration release day event. Pours black-brown with a moderate, foamy tan head. Big cocoa character with pungent burnt pine and dry grapefruit. Good body, fine carbonation. Dry and roasty to finish. Decent.

Keg at Brewdog Brum. Only 4%??? Bonkers. Excellently hoppy BIPA - full of all those US notes I love. Bitter roast finish. Foxo is wrong.

On tap at BrewDog Birmingham. Black (yes, really) almost headless ale with a long bitter malt finish. Packs a punch for such a relatively low ABV. I liked it but found it a bit one-dimensional. Bitter and black. Not a lot else.

Keg at Brewdog, pours black with a foamy small head, pretty complex and rich aroma with roasty caramel, burnt brown sugar, grapefruit & orange flavours from the hops with floral and elderberry textures. For a brew that is only 4%, this packs a lot in My favourite of the collab beers.
