(Bottle, 0.5 l, at Black Door, 20120817) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and almost white. Aroma had pine, grass and hint of roasted malts in the background. Palate was medium bodied and a bit oily with medium carbonation. Flavours were hops, roasted malts, ash, pine, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was roasty, hoppy and bitter. Aroma promised less roastedness than the taste delivered. A great beer nevertheless.

500ml bottle @ Black Door, Helsinki

BBE May 2013 - Pours pitch black with a nice smooth light brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, chocolate, licorice, some fruity hops and hints of berries. Taste is quite heavily roasted with some chocolate and coffee notes and some citrusy, fruity hoppiness. Finish is slightly salty and fruity with some light roasty coffee notes. Nice, well balanced, roasty black IPA.

First rating: Big beige-brown lasting head. Mostly opaque black body goes deep dark brown at edges. Spicy roasty earthy aroma with chocolatey notes. Dry-sweet spicy earthy gooseberry taste with roasty notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry roasty earthy chocolatey aftertaste with spicy gooseberry notes. Lovely, harmonic beer with lots of flavour. (0.33l bottle, from wine monopoly, Strømmen.) 6,4,7,3,13=3.3

Second rating: Big brown-beige head. Opaque black body goes deep dark red at the bottom with fast carbonation. Deep roasty tropical fruit aroma with wooden overripe berries notes. Dry-sweet roasty pineapple taste with wooden notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry wooden lacquer and tropical fruit aftertaste with burnt dusty notes. The aroma has some jarring combinations, but it’s much more harmonic in the mouth. (0.33l bottle, from wine monopoly, Strømmen.) 6,4,7,3,13=3.3

500ml Bottle - Black with a tan head. Pine, roasted malt, grapefruit and plain chocolate in the aroma. Hoppy, soapy and roasted taste with coffee, liquorice and chocolate detected. Really nice.

50cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Black colour, creamy light beige head. Aroma of citrus hops, light pine, roasted malts, light smoke, coffee, chocolate. Flavour is roasted malts, light chocolate, coffee, all very smooth, nice citrus flavours, grapefruit, smooth bitter finish. Reminded me a lot of De Molen Stout & Hop. Medium to fullbodied, soft carbonation. One of the first BIPA’s I thoroughly enjoyed. And another Buxton winner.

From keg at the Euston Tap on 9 September 2014. Not had this chappie in a while and it was a pleasure to renew acquaintance (note to self: where are my old and more extensive notes?). Really lovely fruity, tropical hop character on the nose. Excellent balance of roast and bitter/grapefruit hop character on the palate. Just as a black IPA should be.

Bottle from de Molen Beershop, bottled 19/2/15 BB 19/2/16, large sample. Dark brown color, big frothy light brown head. Big aroma of piney and citrussy hop, slight roast and hint of cookie. Medium bitterness in taste, some roast, slight cookie sweetness. Slight thin in body, but the aroma makes up for that. Good beer.

bottle. black. initially a very, nice grapefruity citrus, fresh currants and gooseberries, hoppy bouquet, which actually lasts for a while. turns piny though, and roasty. full bodied, smooth. roasted malts, licorice. dark berries, violets. with the lingering fruity citrus in the finish. drinkable and nice. a bit too clean almost.

AshtonMcCobb (7027) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 3, 2017
Bottle from Hanging Bat. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - wafts of canned oranges and apples on opening. A general expansion into fruit salad by the time the pour has finished. On closer inspection add some resin and molasses. Taste - more fruit salad intermingled with molasses, dark chocolate and toffee. Marmalade. Lime taper on the finish. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - great stuff. A very narrow style to get right but this was nailed. First 4 of 2017.
