On tap at the Loyal Legion, pours a clear copper golden with a small beige head. Aroma brings out toasted nuts, caramel and dry bready malt. Flavour is malty and sweet, with lots of caramel, bready malt and rather pungent alcohol notes. Malty and sweet on the finish, along with phenols. Very nice. bhensonb (15969) - Woodland, California, USA - MAR 11, 2013
Bomber from Made in Oregon. Pours very dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma of dark roasty malt with a bit of chocolate and some hop notes. Near full bodied. Flavor is dark and roasty with chocolate. There’s some bitterness to offset all the malt - I don’t think it qualifies as either sweet or dry. There’s some astringency. If pressed I vote dry. Tap at Baileys Taproom, Portland. Colour is deep dark brown with small slightly brownish white bubbly head. Aromas and flavours: Some chocolate, hints of fruits, hints of hops and roasted malts. 5000 (6900) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - DEC 25, 2012
Bottle: Deep brown, cola highlights, large frothy beige head, nice lacing. Somewhat of a roasty nose, pine tree like spices, soft cocoa or chocolate. Dry roastiness on the tongue. Bakers chocolate, a bit astringent. Body and mouthfeel are moderate. Strong Pine and Douglas Fir tree like spices on the backside. Also seems shrubby, with lingering unsweetened chocoate or cocoa. By this time it gets a little tough to drink. Hides the ABV well at least.   The forest is strong in this one! jgb9348 (6586) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - JAN 29, 2014
Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a deep brown glow, about 90% opaque with a thick, rich, four centimetre tall brown head - looks very nice, not like an Old though. Aroma of bright fresh PNW and piney hops with a rich roasted malt and oatmeal scent and some fruits and yeast to round out the smells. Medium to Full-bodied; Roasty flavour with a good rich chocolate and oatmeal flavour, some earthy notes, hints of nuts throughout and a solid hop profile, on the lighter side, near the finish. Aftertaste shows some cream and lactic notes, a bit of caramelised sugars and hints of the hop bitterness. Overall, much more of a Black IPA than an Old Ale for sure, but probably most compatible with the Sweet Stout or Stout category. More importantly, a good solid beer with a nice profile, smooth complexity and a good bite for the wintertime. Definitely worth room in your suitcase if you’re bringing this one back home, as I did! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Made in Oregon in Portland (PDX Airport - Terminal D) on 11-November-2013 for US$6.95 sampled at home in Washington on 29-January-2014.

On tap at the 2007 Holiday Ale Festival. Dark amber with a small beige head. Very nice display of hops and malt, no excess alochol present. Toasted earthy malt flavor up front, caramel, and almost fig sweet flavor. Hops were there, but not enough to balance, but this style is usually pretty sweet, good warming winter brew. 22oz bottle bought from Roth’s Vista Market.
$3.99 ( 7% alc.)
Dark brown cloudy body with a large attractive thick tan head.
Nice chocolaty, creamy nose..cocoa and coffee too.
Taste the same but more cocoa and cream..slightly roasted malts..nice.
Good smooth and creamy palate..easy going down.
I thought this a nice beer despite the cheesy name...to me its a porter not an Old Ale Fatehunter (2640) - Corbett, Oregon, USA - DEC 7, 2015
Pours a finger and half of head on a dark straw body.
The aroma is chocolate, milk, toast and bread.
The taste has mild lemon bitterness and a nice bread flavor.
The texture is thicker.
Quite enjoyable. troopie (2497) - Munchen an der Willamette, Oregon, USA - DEC 29, 2012
Draught. Aroma was unfortunate, smelled rather like furniture polish. Dark brown with moderate white head. Lovely flavour malty with a nutty overtone. Might make a good pour over Christmas plum cake. Long and lasting malt finish Arayaga2 (2224) - portland, Oregon, USA - DEC 22, 2014
Even toned brown/black with thin white head. Both aroma and taste are primarily of mildly cheesy, but resinous hops. Taste has some dialed down porter aspects to it with some chocolate, but overall, it confuses me. $4.75/pint
