Clear dark amber with a nice fizzy, lacy, disappearing beige head. Smells of sweet caramel malt, light roast, and dry bread. Medium oily body. Sweet taste of malt, nut and caramel with notes of straw and a bitter acidic hop finish. Very average bitter with general good qualities but nothing much to stand out.

Quite smoky, easily the dominant aroma and flavour. Good, full bodies malt flavour. Low carbonation. Had at St Christophers inn London. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice head but after that could have been a mass produced 80 shilling on keg. Nothing stood out but then Im not really a fan of the malt heavy style.

Bottled as Edinburgh Castle, deep brown with a big off-white head, faintly sweet malt and metal nose, gassy, sweet and lightly earthy hop-bitter on the palate, a distant metallic twang and a touch of toffee.

Cask. Under the name Edinburgh Castle. Aroma of roasted malts and stone fruits. Chestnut brown with white foam head. Tastes earthy, malty and rich with a pleasantly refreshing aeration and cereal finish. Im glad to get some more Caledonian beers down in Nottingham since only a few places keep Deuchars IPA and the bitter and stout are equally session worthy.

Cask at The City Hotel, Durham, 3/pint. Good-looking red-amber beer with a smooth, off-white head. The nose has sweet cereal, buttered popcorn and a hint of tropical fruit. The palate is smooth but the taste is a little too bitter with loads of grassy hop flavours. Reasonable bitter.
