Not your traditional brown ale. This is a big, bad, bold brown. It’s the intersection of a cabernet and an IPA. Or, say, 19th and Broadway. A blend of three oaks added during fermentation creates a red wine-like structure. California Cascade hops bring the local flavor that goes from roasted and bitter on first swig to a soulful, chocolate finish. Generally speaking, not for wussies. But who are we to say?

Aromas of deep roasted malt, mild coffee, toffee, chocolate and tons of caramelized oak.. Mmmmm.. I love it... Loooong, lingering flavors of caramel, toffee, coffee, roasted nuts and roasted malt truly stain the palate for minutes... minutes!!! Medium-medium-plus bodied, good carbonation, with a nearly dry, kinda bitter finish. Well made. Hits the spot for a local brown ale. Thank you Calicraft!!! You earned my support. --- tasted while on a long journey to understand the world around me...

Bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting creamy tan head. Aromas of caramel, cocoa, earthiness and a hint of citrus. Palate was light bodied and smoith. Flavors of cocoa, caramel, earthiness and a hint of pine with a smoith lingering earthy cocoa finish.

Aroma is caramel, honey and citrus. Very viscous and sweet body here with a sticky mouthfeel.Nice execution but not overly sessionable.

Dark brown, medium head. Looks nice. Big nutty malts, even a bit of alcohol...definitely a big brown. Soft and sweet, both toasty and nutty, and even then some nice brown sugar sweetness. The general size allows it to sort of throw all the classic brown ale elements at the wall without any real subtlety. So maybe not the most elegant brew, but pretty enjoyable if you're in the mood for something a little over the top.

Emeryville, Ca - BevMo! - 22 oz bomber, Dark copper pour, slight haze; thin, bone colored head. Aroma has some dates, some nutty accents, a touch of chocolate. Solid flavor, some vanilla, a touch of baker’s unsweetened chocolate, some canned baked brown bread, finishes with a touch of caramel. Chewy, thick mouthfeel, Rating #46 of my 2017 Northern California vacation.

Pours dark brown with some foam, nutty aroma and taste, pleasant aftertaste, very standard brown but that’s a compliment, bottle.

Bottle from liquor store. Brown color, white head. Bitter taste with nuts, toffee, oak, wood, a bit of roasted malts and fruits. Bitter finish with nuts, malts, wood, oak and fruits. Very nice brown ale.

Bottle from beer of month club from jenny. Thanks! Nose is sweet bread and clove and roared nuts. Smooth up front with more acrid followthru. Hop bite is mild and shows up about 2/3 of the way thu and cocoa and smoky notes are at the end. Decent but not the best but brown. Would do again.

Smell is decent balance of coffee and chocolate, medium sweet and bready. Bread and coffee and tin in the taste, and medium balanced.

One of my favorite beers. A strong but not overpowering coffee taste. Smooth and dark, like Oakland itself.

Lacho (109) - USA - SEP 8, 2016
Drank straight from the bottle, no idea about color, but aromas of toasted grains are evident. Tastes like roasted coffee and buttered toast, good beer with very well balanced alcohol content, which is really not that high. Great beer to jump into more potent porters and stouts.
