COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Not your traditional brown ale. This is a big, bad, bold brown. Its the intersection of a cabernet and an IPA. Or, say, 19th and Broadway. A blend of three oaks added during fermentation creates a red wine-like structure. California Cascade hops bring the local flavor that goes from roasted and bitter on first swig to a soulful, chocolate finish. Generally speaking, not for wussies. But who are we to say?

Appearance is quite dark, root beer when leaned in the light, otherwise solid espresso color. Nice tan head with cool-shaped lacing like a hippo head amidst foreign countries. Aroma has caramel and light nuts and chocolate, almost like a chocolate root beer float. Medium mouthfeel with a nice light creaminess floating around after swallowing. Taste is moderately bitter at first, there's a toasty bitterness that lingers for minutes. The following tastes, though, add caramel and nut and light cocoa powder with increasing vanilla aftertaste until the chocolate root beer float is closer to reality than fantasy. Overall: A solid brown that starts like a bitter dark chocolate and develops into a semi-sweet chocolate infused with vanilla beans.

Bottle from liquor store. Brown color, white head. Bitter taste with nuts, toffee, oak, wood, a bit of roasted malts and fruits. Bitter finish with nuts, malts, wood, oak and fruits. Very nice brown ale.

Bottle from beer of month club from jenny. Thanks! Nose is sweet bread and clove and roared nuts. Smooth up front with more acrid followthru. Hop bite is mild and shows up about 2/3 of the way thu and cocoa and smoky notes are at the end. Decent but not the best but brown. Would do again.

Smell is decent balance of coffee and chocolate, medium sweet and bready. Bread and coffee and tin in the taste, and medium balanced.

One of my favorite beers. A strong but not overpowering coffee taste. Smooth and dark, like Oakland itself.

Drank straight from the bottle, no idea about color, but aromas of toasted grains are evident. Tastes like roasted coffee and buttered toast, good beer with very well balanced alcohol content, which is really not that high. Great beer to jump into more potent porters and stouts.

a unique brown with roast and caramel and chocolate, but also light fruit and wood notes, mostly in the finish. Not much exposure to this brewer, but they seem to make cool beer.

Bottle at LT. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, chocolate, toffee. Deep brown color with creamy tan head with lace. Tastes of biscuit, sweet with light bitterness. Roasty. Medium body, lively carbonation, oily texture a little on the thin side. As with a lot of these, it sweetens as it warms. Good stuff!

Pours a half finger of head on a dark brown body. The aroma is dry cocoa, roasted malt and wood. The taste is burnt wood, chocolate, milk, and pine bitter at the end. The texture is crisp and thick. Tasty and enjoyable.

Draft. Pours a murky dark brown, little tan head. Aroma is chocolate tootsie pop first and foremost. As you sip, some oak and pine characteristics join in. Somewhere in between an IPA and a porter with vinuous character from the oak. Lots of semi-sweet chocolate on the finish. I like it.
