Once again the brewers at CBC have thrown caution to the wind in our latest annual effort to create the biggest, baddest, strongest, bestest beer around. Double-mashed with nearly a ton of malt, five different hops, and cold-aged several months with French Limousine oak, this extraordinary, complex ale boasts flavors and aromas of caramel, dried fruit, vanilla, oak, toffee, spicy hops, and a warming alcohol finish. Very rich and full-bodied, it is unfiltered and unfined. This unique beer will be available all winter, served for your admiration and enjoyment in a 9oz. snifter.

Volgon (2763) - Manchester, New Hampshire, USA - JAN 20, 2004
UPDATED: FEB 15, 2004 On tap at the brewpub: Red/orange color, brown sugar aroma, full slick mouthfeel, and sweet and heavy. No score change. Extreme Beer Fest 2004: Clear orange color with a large off-white head. Caramel and molasses in the aroma, full bodied. Starts and ends sweet with a slight sour note at the end that is quickly enveloped by bitterness.

rich copper & brown color w/ a small tan head laces well. Aroma is alcohol & light carmels some light odd fuggle maybe hop aromas. Creamy well coated palate. Warm swallow very sweet english stype bw w/ a hot hop bite of grass that fades quickly and leaves a bit of a bitter tongue. Solid BW but seemed to be lacking something to me.

2004/05 vintage - at brewpub: Nice mahagony red color. Nice head, leaving brussels laces on the glass. Medium alcohol nose - brandy like with a touch of cookie dough. Nice and smooth - lingers down easily. Woody and raison with a medium alcohol taste, which stays nicely behind. I was pretty impressed by this one.

Another beer consumed during the EBF weekend without proper notes, but I really don’t need them for this beer because it rocked my palate. This was outstanding! Great flavor and aroma of dried fruit and caramel. Would love to consume an entire glass on just an empty stomach because this might fill me up fast.

On tap at CBC. Big boozy sweet taste. Caramel and bourbon. Pretty nice barley wine, but nothing out of the ordinary.

whaleman (2178) - North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 3, 2004
GABF 2004. Clear copper body. Sweet nose of toffee, maple syrup, vanilla, and a touch of smoke. Woody and considerably sweet. Mouthfeel is somewhat syrupy. A good, solid barley wine all-around.

scraff (2121) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - DEC 12, 2007
Tap @ CBC - Deep hazed orange, creamy off white head. Deep rich nose of dried fuzzy fruit, vanilla, oak, and bourbon sit upon toffee brittle notes and hints of coconut cotton candy. Brown sugared bourbon and spiced peach flavors round into soft vanilla wood-like notes. A light hop bitterness in the end truly provides balance to the full richness. Medium to full-bodied, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Fantastic execution of the barrel here. Should have grabbed a growler, but two snifters (plus other beers) rendered me silly…

dirtymike (2016) - Manchester, New Hampshire, USA - JAN 20, 2004
Extreme Beer Fest '04, Copper in color with a small white head.Sweet and bitter, hoppy, dry malt finish.

SuIIy (1983) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - DEC 31, 2009
Draft at brewery. Pours a pinkish, red color with a small egg shell head. Nose is piney hops with a very nice, datey kind of malt note. Palate is full and sticky. Flavors of piney hops with lots of sweet and datey malts. Finishes sticky with a bitterness.
