4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Review taken from notes I wrote on a scrap of paper. Served on tap at Zwanze Day ’11 at West Lakeview Liquors. Sampled in my newly acquired Cantillon tasting flute. Zwanze pours a light pinkish red with about a half fingers worth of thin white head. Not much to add in terms of lacing as the head dissipates rather quickly. Nose is predominately pepper, grape, light cherry, lemon rind, grass, must, and horse blanket. The taste follows suit with more grape and lemon rind, cob web, and pepper on the finish. I was told at Zwanze Day that the pepper character actually came from the grapes that were used in Zwanze ’11....pretty interesting. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, with pleasant acidity, light carbonation, and a nice finish. Though I still need to try Zwanze ’08 (which I thankfully have in my cellar), this has been my favorite of the series by far. I hope Zwanze Day happens for years to come, couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day.
Bottle at Moeder, split 3 ways with the wife and Mike (bytemesis), cheers! Pour is a rose-red, small carb gives an thin pink-ish head. Aroma is of barnyard, horse blanket, pinot grape, wet oak, light hay, light berry skin. Taste is a gorgeous medley of grape skins, funky vinous notes, medium hay, medium horse blanket. Great balance of the tart and the funk...all tied together with a sticky wine note. FInishes with signature Cantillon funk, semi-tart, semidry. Fantastic! Golden-cranberry with a pink-tinged head that is large and well-retained for the style.
Aw yes, that stinks very nicely. This is like the fresh Cantillons from 10 or so years ago that I used to drink so regularly (as opposed to it being impossible to find now). Just a lovely, sulfur-rich nose with tart, bright, brett and grape acids mixing very nicely together. No real acetic character and light lactic notes, with tons and tons of rich, leathery, horseblanket-like barnyard. Not as much fruit as many of the other grape lambics I’ve had, but still enough to add complexity. No alcohol or flaw.
Similar flavor, with a highly effervescent, well-attenuated, malt/wheat-soft palate, vivacious grape notes (piquant currant, cranberry, gooseberry) with tons of brett and lactic character and a moderately-strong sourness with tons of tartness lingering behind the teeth. Superb and elegant.

Pours reddish/pink with low pink head. Some lacing. Aroma is of cheese, meat, fruits, tannins, grapes. Taste is of sourness, fruits, acidity, grapes. Palate: Light-medium body. Medium carbonation. Very nice balance. Overall: Very nice, crafty grapes. Outstanding.
This one is hard to review because the three versions are so completely different from one another. Almost like they’re not the same beer. In any event, the old one is musty and hose blankety. Z11 has this complexity and grapiness that’s just brilliant. And the new one is some WOW JUICE.
