Banana/phenol aroma. Thinnish white head. Dirty golden-yellow colour. Pretty good, definitely a solid weizen, but nothing that really stands out.

On tap at Warren’s Ale House in Wheaton, IL., and shaker served with a cloudy, golden color, a modest layer of white head foam that reduced rather quickly to a ring & film, and left some spots & streaks of lacing. The nose was light, smooth grain, banana, some sweet esters, and light spice, mainly clove. The flavor added some citrus and tartness, low hop bitterness, and a touch of yeasty funkiness as found in many Belgian Ales. 12 oz. bottle from my wife’s aunt in Madison. Pours a mostly clear, bright gold with a thick, frothy white head that takes a long time to go down. Aroma of bready malts, wheat, banana, clove, straw, and grass. The flavor has a lot of lemon, with bready malts, straw, banana, apricot, and peach. Just a little clove. Bottle poured a cloudy gold with a lingering ring of white foam. Aromas of wheat, yeast and light clove. Palate was light to medium bodied and crisp. Flavors of wheat, yeast, clove and light citrus with a crisp lingering clove finish.

Bottle. Typical cloudy off yellow with white head. Yeasty smelling. More spice then bitter. Not spicy like a pumpkin ale but like a summer hay field. Not bad but better if it was hot

12oz courtesy of GhostFace. Cheers, Neal! Pours a hazy yellow with a white head. Nose is bread, sweet lemon, fruit, and bubble gum with some yeast. Flavor is similar- sweet hefeweizen- very easy to gulp and at 5.12%, it goes down smooth. Capital’s Weizen is an interesting version of the style, in that it seems to offer many enjoyable, robust aspects in the flavor (emphasis on malt and banana esters), but has a somewhat off-putting aroma throughout. I’d be curious to try this again, perhaps I had an off bottle, but with numerous hefeweizen offerings, I’m unlikely to give this another chance ("C/C+" in class for the style).
Pours a dense head of slightly off-white bubbles that is only about three centimeters, a bit short for the style. The head has fairly good retention for the style, lasting a few minutes, gradually falling to a 0.5cm cap atop the body of the beer, leaving some modest lacing as it does so. The body is hazy, nearly opaque, and a faded golden orange-yellow in color. Carbonation is marginally visible through the haze of the body.
Aroma is a bit strange at first, offering subdued yeast, wheat malt, and banana-like esters with a stronger emphasis on phenolics and a strange processed-meat aroma that is overly pronounced. With time, the processed-meat aroma reduces, and I’m left with a more pleasant, slightly toasted wheat malt aroma combined with very modest bananas and yeast.
Taste opens with fairly bland wheat malt with modest banana esters and yeast flavors. Mid-palate sees the flavor opening up a bit, bringing out quite good banana and hefeweiss yeast aspects, along with a slight toasted nature to the malt. Closes out with a substantial banana bread flavor, a bit of diacetyl, and bubblegum. Lingering aftertaste is of ripe bananas and modest yeast.
Beer is medium bodied with a slight wateriness around the edges. Carbonation is pleasantly mid- to high-mid level, balancing out the body’s weight and the beer’s sweetness. Finish is dry, slightly tart, which easily invites taking another sip. Bjshades (156) - Iowa, USA - JUL 20, 2012
