on tap at the brewpub. pours a rich gold /light copper with a thin white head. tasted earthy, like peat. almonds and hazelnuts. when it grows up, it wants to be a single malt scotch. a fine sweet aroma. this is a really good beer.

Clear copper with very little head. Possibly because it just came on line today. The rest have been excellent in all areas of appearance. The aroma is a little bit floral, a little bit musty and a little bit of pear fruitiness. The flavor is full of the spiced stewed pear fruit. A bit sweet. Interesting, but not really all that complex.

light brown tall tan head. Smells of ginger and other spice w/ some english style malts. Avg palate. flavor is ginger and pepper and an odd tasting sweet malt. Not very good.

This beer was really interesting. A smokey aroma with a smokey/ meaty flavor. Tasted like a ham and cheese sandwich. A smoked meat and wood flavor throughout. A nice mix in their line-up.

Draught at the Downtown location. Amber with a lacy head. Aroma of spices, medicinal herbs, caramel, and earthy hops. The flavor has some toasty, toffee, and caramel malt sweetness, and earthy bitterness, and lots if medicinal spice. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. The spice is a bit overboard and could definitely be mellowed, but didn’t ruin it.

Yeast, light pepper, clay like malt, a little grassy and herbal. Flavor has a bunch of earthy clay, some unripe fruits, yeast, light spice.

GABF 2005. Clear, deep golden body with a medium foamy off-white head. Mild aroma of citrus, floral esters, and light malt. Sweet honey-like flavor with some fruity esters and low bitterness. Too sweet and sticky. A lackluster Biere de Garde. I was very surprised to see this beer win a gold medal minutes after I sampled it.

Clear and coppery, white fizzy head. Real interseting and somewhat complex nose of ginger, toast, caramel, grass, and black pepper. Flavor was similar with up front tones of more ginger and black pepper that balance on a bed of grassy hops. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, spicy finish. 7.5% ABV here for those that need to know. I like it for the fact that it was unique, not the same boring staple beers they always brew. A good effort...

Draft, Cap City Downtown RBSG 2006. Clear copper with a white head. Caramel, some grass, and light spice in the nose. Flavor has notes of spiciness, pepper, a touch of flowers and caramel. Medium bodied with a smooth texture and moderate carbonation. Solid, drinkable stuff.

Sampled on draught at the brewpub in Shirlington, VA. Very interesting and flavor example of biere de Garde, brewed with black pepper and ginger. This beer pours to murky, caramel color, with a thick, creamy, white head, and a moderate carbonation. The nose on this beer is spicy, with aromas of ginger, and crushed black pepper. The palate is firm, with good pale and toasted malt flavor, paired with a very evident, spicy/peppery back drop. This beer finishes with more pale and toasty malt up front, then ends with some spicy ginger and black pepper, paired with some warming heat. Very interesting, spicy, beer. You really can taste the black pepper in this beer. I enjoyed it, but it might be off putting for some. Makes a nice beer to match with a number of dishes on the Cap City menu.
