UPDATED: MAR 18, 2007 (Shirlington, 3/18/07, cask) No notes taken, just a reflection that this beer is every bit as good as I remember it. Lots of caramel/toffee combined with good floral hoppiness. (8/4/8/4/16)

(Shirlington, 12/24/04) Cloudy amber body with beige head, nice lacing. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, earthy, some pepper. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, earthy, some spice, pepper. Medium bitterness. Dryish earthy finish with light herbal. Light-medium body with some creaminess. Nothing amazing, but a wonderfully balanced beer. (7/4/9/4/17)
Draft. Clear deep amber color, thick white head, solid lacing. Aroma of biscuit, subtle white peper. Taste is black pepper, honey covered homemade biscuits fresh from the oven. Very tasty. beervana (781) - Libertyville, Illinois, USA - FEB 6, 2006
(02.03.06) On tap at Capitol City brewpub (Capitol Hill), Washington, D.C. Hazy amber hued ale having a large white head with good lacing. No discernable carbonation. Sweet malty aroma. Medium bodied ale that starts with light malt sweetness and light hop flavor. Finishes with light hop bitterness. Well-balanced but with higher malt profile relative to hops. A very good drinkable session beer. kassner (1686) - Wexford, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 16, 2008
Had this beer on tap in DC. Really nice for type, with plenty of hops. Dark Amber, modest head, and plenty of Malt up front. JonMoore (2067) - Loughborough, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - JAN 23, 2006

I had this beer a while back and from what I can remember I enjoyed it. I’ve had this at the pub/brewery so it was fresh.
Nothing special about it is popping into my head at the moment. beaconstreet (811) - Washington DC, USA - OCT 27, 2006
It was alright... fairly standard but unoffensive. Great for the bitter style though. molassesfan (202) - Raleigh, North Carolina, USA - OCT 19, 2006
Pours amber with a large white head. Decent lacing. Aroma of malt and caramel. Taste is the same with some apple, plum, and hops. A bit unbalanced, favoring malt, and a bit flat too. Could use some work. bth122 (1628) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 15, 2012
Draft. Copper color. Small head. Aroma of caramel malt. Light sweetness. Medium light bodied. Easy to drink. Sweet caramel flavors. Slight bitter finish. Decent. whaleman (2178) - North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 26, 2005
Capitol Hill brewpub. Bright copper body with a sudsy white head. Mild, fruity malt aroma with some weak, earthy and spicy hops. Both toasted and tea-like malts in the flavor plus more hop character than in the aroma. Has a fruity, cooked apple quality that doesn’t exactly please me. Medium bitterness but the sweetness lasts, extending through the finish. Somewhat lackluster for an ESB.
