On tap at the brewpub in downtown. Pours a deep ruby with a thin, but creamy tan head that has good retention and spotty lacing. Aroma of coffee grinds, semisweet chocolate, roasted malt. Taste has a bit of a meaty and smoky body with chocolate-covered cherries. Bitter hops in the finish. Medium-bodied. A bit astringent but the smokiness and chocolate really bring this porter alive. Very good- a nice surprise. Drake (13639) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 5, 2009
Sampled on draft at the brewpub, Shirlington location. Pours a hazy raspberry red color with a medium head. Poor head retention and lacing. Aroma of nuts, chocolate and light roast. Aroma: Chocolate, Chocolate, and more Chocolate
Appearance: Dark brown/black, thin dark white head
Flavor: The chocolate dominates this well balanced porter, slight underlying earthy tones
Palate: Smooth, drinkable, medium body
Pretty enjoyable beer. I enjoyed the balance of the sweetness (coco and coffee) with the porter hops.
Draught at the downtown location. Dark brown with a beige head. Sweet malt aroma with a bit of roast. Light smoky, burnt malt and thin coffee flavor, with more sweetness developing further in and a mildly bitter finish. The body was pretty thin, which is my main complaint; it just didn’t feel like a good porter. Brigadier (3665) - Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA - JAN 5, 2009
On tap at brewpub
**Summary** - The last of the beers in the sampler tray this was also probably the best of the regular offerings here. If pressed I could order half price pints of this and be quite happy to spend an afternoon.
**Aroma / Appearance** - Murky black, it exuded a light smokiness like you get the day after a bonfire. Meaty malts support the experience giving the whole thing the feel of a smokehouse.
**Flavor / Palate** - Fluid at all times it washes smoothly over the tongue and throat. Along the way come smoke, chocolate, and black coffee. Very solid for a porter this is almost more like a stout.

Tasted more like a stout, smoky coffee and chocolate flavored, very full body, almost black in color, somewhat bitter finish. Fair. ApisAles (1575) - Greenbelt, Maryland, USA - DEC 9, 2008
Poured a decent looking deep brown with a tan head. Aroma seemed a little smoked, with some malt. Flavor was more bitter burnt flavor. Not sure if this one got fouled in the brewing process or if this is what it is supposed to taste like. Lubiere (13772) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 7, 2008
Murky brown porter with a thin lacing light moka head. A nutty chocolate aroma with light herbal notes. In mouth, a nice chocolate malt with light hopping and sustained coffee. Medium bodied. Tasted at Downtown location, April 14 2008. puzzl (3258) - New York, New York, USA - JUN 19, 2008
Tap at the brewpub. Mildly roasty, dark chocolate aroma. Bitter hops in the flavor are very out of place, with an awfully thin body, and no good roast at all. JoeMcPhee (9426) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 14, 2008
Tap at the downtown location. Very dark brown/black beer with a thick sticky light brown head. Aroma is very nice and chocolatey. Lots of rich herbal character throughout, complex malts and lots of earthy/woody hop aroma as well. Flavour is also chocolatey, herbal and bitter. Good palate, rich but not too sweet. Good balance with a lingering earthiness. I quite liked this.
