This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren’t afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain’s Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

UPDATED: NOV 12, 2013 Bottle. Sampling session at Lefty’s. Nice mix of pine and citrus, and some stinky fruitiness. Light grapefruit and some sweet peach / mid balances very well / finish is tasty and full of gentle bitterness. Medium body. Bit of a hop bomb at first, but goes milder quickly with a lovely range of fruit.

At a tasting at KyotoLefty’s place. A straw gold with a filmy head, powerful aroma of citrus with a touch of pine. A medium to full body with an ascerbic, bitter, hoppy... kind of stinky tropical fruits, citrus & pine. A solid IPA, not so complex but good & not too boozy.

A: Mildly Hazy Golden Straw Hue, Passes A Lot of Light, White Head Ring, Decent Lacing S: Floral, Piney, Mild Malts T: Piney, Resin, Mild Grapefruit M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Bitter, Dry Overall, this would be a great IPA but they list it as a DIPA and it kind of lacks from that aspect. Good but not great.

Golden color with small off white head. Aroma hops of the citrus kind with some grainy malt. Medium body, little alcohol of note. Flavor matches aroma with mostly citrus hops and tending toward the dry bitter side. Good.

Nose improves as it warms. Started out grainy, boozy, with pine and a touch of citrus. A bit more of a pine / citrus split as it warms. Clear and gold. Hop dominated taste but nice full bodied mouthfeel is the prize here, a bit silky, a bit chewy. Alcohol hidden in taste. Not bad, I was expecting more, but not bad.

A 0.5l bottle @ Tribeca Tavern, NYC. A really lovely looking fluffy big white top on this one. Looks like a be from the comics books, and the body is as good as clear and golden in color. Fantastic hoppy and sweet fruity aroma. Really peachy with lots of mango and mango zest. Lots of pine and pine cones also. Smells as archetype-correctt as it should. Lovely. The pine continues in the taste. Lots of it. The mouthfeel heel is to my surprise a bit light, thin oily i guess and the carbonation is quite soft. Lots of sweet sticky malt sweetness with a floral touch in the finish. Quite easy to drink considering the imperialism of it. 14.06.2013
