There was a Captain Lawrence tasting over at Pizza Paradiso in DC a couple of months about and I missed it... Drat! I really wanted to be there because I had never sampled a CL product before. Last week, I was in "Connecticut Ave. Wine, Liquor, & Deli" and found this gem. Funny...I never even knew the area got CL products. Then again, I guess DC can get anything. The bottle looked fresh (no dust, on the front row, etc.), so I grabbed it and here we are:
A: Medium Yellow-orange color, with about 1/2 inch head, which became foamier after subsequent pours. That sucker lingered throughout the session - Yikes!
T: Pretty sweet, which muted some of the grapefruit bitterness. Maybe a little bit of peach? Very flavorful!
M: Coats the mouth pretty heavily, and starts to overstay its welcome a bit towards the end. I kept a glass of water handy.
D: I had no trouble finishing the bottle, although the intense syrupiness was a bit much. But hey....this is a reserve beer with a 9% ABV. What was I expecting?...a Dortmunder?
Overall, a delicious beer session!
Flowery hoppy nose. Pale head. Golden color. Hoppy slightly sweet taste. Warming alcohol. Alcohol in the nose too. Gerbeer (3782) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - FEB 10, 2016
On tap. Pours amber with light foamy head. Aromas of oranges, pineapple, pine and dough. Flavors follow with bitter citrus rind, toasted malts and more bitter pine. Peppery. For those that like a bitter DIPA. Hennessyjk (37) - Nashua, New Hampshire, USA - JAN 22, 2016
Wonderful hazy orange appearance. Hops are forward at the start and finish. Aroma is wonderful. A very nice DIPA

This is not an amateur IPA. Just sayin. You must tolerate bitter and hop. You must. No choice! It's the bitter that has the biggest bite! But at 9 Ibv it's ok.

Pours a hazy golden yellow with somewhat thick and foamy head. Apricot and malt aromas. Good DIPA sweetness up front, but then an integrating change to malty and almost chocolate tones towards the end. Boozy. Not much pine or tropical fruit, but grapefruit is present. Interested to see how it will change as it warms up.

Aroma has notes of citrus and pine hop aroma. Color is a light gold with an average white head. Flavor favors the pine hop flavor over the citrus. Malt flavor is light with notes of bread. Mouthfeel is medium with medium carbonation. Overall, it's an average imperial IPA.

I had this solo on 4.6.14. Golden pour with no lasting head. Smell is super piney with some citrus notes. Flavor is the same - but the pine is too earthy and not super pleasant. ACHops (1594) - Seattle, Washington, USA - DEC 10, 2015
On tap @ Pony Bar. Pours clear pale golden with thin white head. Aroma is dank juicy citrusy hops, thin caramel malt. Taste is grainy, somewhat harsh malt followed by earthy bitter hops, nice juicy dark citrus notes. Great flavor here, the malt just didn’t stand up to the hops for me.
