COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is a salute to the ingenuity and creativity of the American craft brewers. A uniquely American style of beer, the Double or Imperial IPA, has become the calling card of many craft brewers who aren’t afraid to push the limits of what hops can add to a beer. This beer is big and hoppy - not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to experience sensory overload as you savor this Imperial IPA. Sensory Profile: Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip. Food Pairing: This beer needs an assertive food to stand up to it. Match Captain’s Reserve with aged cheeses such as Stilton, cured and grilled meats.

(Handbottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of moejuck. Hazy, amber golden with a small, off-white head. Distinct aroma of citrus and pine. Fairly full in body with lightly sweet malts and plenty of citrus and peach notes. A lovely aroma bitterness in the finish. 060407

Bottle. Pours a mostly clear, dark yellow with a medium, white head. Big hop aroma with grapefruit, orange peel and grass. Lightly sweet with some caramel and honey, then very bitter with lots of citrus and pine. Medium to full in body with average carbonation. Finishes with moderate sweetness but mostly piney, citrusy and resiny hops. Very good.

Hazy orange with a lasting off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and rather hoppy - peach and pine. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 090712

Cask (gravity) at GBBF 2009, Day 1 @ 9.0%. Hit the spot nicely. Quite pale gold colour. Very strong leafy hop character, accentuated by the dry-hopping. Doesn’t stray into the sweet, sticky territory of some DIPAs I’ve tried and has enough biscuity malt backing to avoid being one-dimensional. Mouthfeel is exceedingly firm and there is an intense lingering bitterness in the aftertaste that tends towards astringence but stops short of that.

11/13/12/12/10/12

Colden bright color; nice perlage, very small bubbles; medium sized head. The aroma is intense, with strong toffee; the hops are very piney, but also with a touch of vanilla and cookies. Excellent toffee flavor, with some residual sugars, but the body is quite lean; there is some cake flavor too; very strong bitterness, fresh hopping, creamy and biscuity, with soft fruits and soft resins. Powerful but harmonious.

Cloudy amber color; creamy head. Very nice hoppy aroma, with resins and fruits (delicate grapefruit). Good malty body, with an excellent aromatic and powerful hopping, with a lot of hop oils. Smooth and elegant. Excellent!

At GBBF 2009. Pure gold colour. Lovely aroma. Hot cos of the alcohol. Really quite strong because of the ABV but lovely at the same time.

500mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany!), pours a mostly clear pale golden with a medium foamy white head. Aroma is very piney, truckloads of piney hops, floral notes, and a cracker-y malt backing. Flavour is beautifully resinous and piney in its upfront hop character without overburdening the palate with bitterness, with just enough cracker malt backing - some floral notes in there as well. Creamy, piney and satisfying on the palate. Nothing new here, but it’s brewed beautifully.

Bottle. Golden beer, offwhite head. Malty nutty aroma, vinous and with some hops. Milky flavor, grassy, metal notes. Decent beer, but where did the hops go?
